  1. Canada’s Early Government Turmoil between the French and the British

French and the British Argue • Both sides wanted the profitable fur trade • Treaty gets signed in 1713 where Great Britain gets Hudson Bay, Newfoundland and part of Acadia • France controlled the lowlands south and land around the St. Lawrence River • BOTH wanted the Ohio River Valley • British wants the Beaver Fur and French wanted the Land

Great Britain Gains Control 7 years war • British win the battle of Quebec in 1759 and the Treaty of Paris is signed in 1763 which gives them complete control over Canada • The French return to France but some stay and the first two governors of Canada pass the Quebec Act which gave the French living in Quebec the right to speak in French, practice their religion and customs..

  4. Two Colonies Emerge • Loyalists from America sided with Great Britain moved to Canada • Many did not like the French Culture so two colonies emerge • Upper and Lower Canada • Upper: Ontario were loyalists • Lower: Quebec were French Canadians

Canada's Independence • During the war of 1812 the people fought together to protect Canada fro US invasion • French and British start to hate British rule because they felt the government was to far away to understand their needs • Louis Papineau leads a revolt to have lower Canada become a separate country • William Mackenzie does the same in Upper Canada • Both put down by British Troops

Canada win the right to control their government • In 1864 leaders from all over meet to set up a union and in 1867 the British Parliament accepts the British North America Act • Canada becomes a dominion or self governed area • They have the ability to now elect their own leaders to govern under some British control • Canadians become a World power during both World War I and II as an allied force
