  1. Section A – Moral Law • The Ten Commandments (ch 5) • Love the Lord Your God (ch. 6) • Driving out the nations (ch. 7) • Do not forget the LORD (ch. 8) • The Golden Calf (ch. 9) • The Law Tablets (ch. 10:1-11) • Fear the Lord (ch. 10:12 – 22) • Love and obey the LORD (ch. 11)

  2. Drive the Nations Out • Devote themselves to their complete destruction • Make no covenant with them • Show no mercy to them • Shall not intermarry with them, because they will turn their hearts away from God. • Break down their altars • Burn their carved images with fire. • Why is it so critical?

  3. The Blessings of Faithfulness (7:12) • When God’s people listen to HIM and KEEP his commandments • The LORD God will keep his covenant and steadfast love with you • He will bless you, multiply you, and bless the fruit of the ground and your womb (aka lots of children) • You shall be blessed above everyone else

  4. Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread • God provided enough manna for each day (Ex 16:4-5) • OUR Lord Jesus invites us each day to pray that we will be given our Daily Bread (Matt 6:11) • God REMINDS us that man lives by EVERY WORD that comes from the mouth of the LORD. • Amos the prophet declares the GREAT FAMINE will be that GOD’S WORD will be silent. (Amos 8)

  5. God’s Discipline

  6. How Do We Forget God? • Not keeping his commandments and rules and statues (8:13) • When your heart turns away from God (8:14) • When you forget how God has provided for you and delivered you (8:15-17) • When you begin to believe that it is by your power, your strength, and your mighty hand that you have obtained what you have before you. (8:17) • When you go after other gods and serve them and worship them alone. (8:19)

  7. A Friendly Reminder (chapter 9) • Why is God giving them this land? • Why is He driving out our enemies completely? • Not because of YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS, but because of the wickedness of the nations. • Truth is you are not a RIGHTEOUSS people but a STUBBORN and REBELLIOUS NATION (v. 6 - 8)

  8. Even at Mt. Sinai you provoked the LORD to wrath, and the LORD was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you. • God want to blot out their name from heaven. • Moses recounts their terrible sin of Idolatry (chapter 9)

  9. New Tablets of Stone • Chapter 10 begins by retelling the creation of the New Tablets of stone in Exodus 34 • Moses had smashed the first tablets in anger over the Golden Calf. • After forgiving the Israelites, God inscribes two new tablets.

  10. Circumcise Your Heart • The Sign of the Mosaic Covenant was circumcision • In 10:16 we are called to have a circumcision of our heart • Why? The human heart is by nature stubborn and rebellious towards God • A circumcised heart is a heart responding in faith to God’s grace. • See Colossians 2:11 -13

  11. Another Early Creed For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of LORDS, the great and mighty, and awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Exodus 10:17 – 18

  12. Love and Serve the Lord (chapter 11) • Chapter 11 is filled with reminders of our call to Love the Lord our God and to keep his commands, statues, and rules. • Israel’s possession of the Promise Land and God’s blessing of the land and their life in it is directly tied to their faithfulness and obedience. • In order to LOVE God and SERVE God requires that we take God’s Word serious in both our life and in the life of your children.

  13. See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your god, but turn aside from the way… Deuteronomy 11:26 – 27
