Background • Vision: Bring foreign language lesson to learners who are not accessible to the DLIFLC classroom “Anytime anywhere…..” --Dr. Fischer’s idea on using Web 2.0 concept in foreign language learning • Web 2.0 enables interactive information sharing, user created content development, and collaboration on world wide web (www).

Background • Provost Initiative in FY10 • Create a collaborative lessons using Web2.0 tools • Low proficiency learners in distance learning environment • Wisdom Community • Contract-development • Contractor : ACTFL • Period of Performance ( SEP 2010 to SEP 2011) • Deliverables: 40 Lesson models with web2.0 plus 20 hour workshop

  5. 1.0 Objectives • Lessons are designed for learners who have limited proficiency – ILR Level 0+ to Level 1 • Lessons feature activities incorporating various web 2.0 applications: • Linoit , MindMeister, Quizlet, Twitter, Voxopop • Wallwisher, Wordle, VoiceThread, Voki, Goaminate • Google Map, GoogleDoc, Wiki, Skype, etc. • Most of the activities are designed to be asynchronous with an exception of Skype activities.

Objectives: Faculty Development Teacher training: • Command Campaign Plan (L3 T10), “Prepare DLIFLC faculty to work effectively in a blended learning environment,…” • Use E-learning lesson plan models as a resource in preparing DLIFLC faculty members for teaching in a blended learning environment. • Train faculty members to be capable of managing e-learning classroom (asynchronous/synchronous) and facilitating learner collaboration

  7. 1.2 Objectives: Curriculum Development Course Development (CD) • Prepare developers to enable curriculum development for e-learning environment; synchronous and asynchronous • Use E-learning lesson plan models as training and development resource • Incorporate web 2.0 applications to maximize student participation, peer-to-peer learning, learning community, etc.

  8. 1.3 Objectives: Other • Resources for UGE – 1stSem remediation tool, pre-enrollment training for hold-unders • Course Development in the Non-Resident Instruction Directorate (e.g. AFPAK) • Study Hall • Self-study • Field support

  9. 2.0 Structure of eLearning Models • Task-based activities • Provide learners with controlled, narrow topics • Provide learners with carefully designed prompts to elicit a particular topic and to control the discourse mode produced by the learners • Involve an information gap that motivates learners to use TL • Achieve a balance between cognitive processing and focus on form
