  1. About the Open Educational Resources Grants

  2. Open Educational Resources Project • In February 2010, The Maine Department of Education (MDOE) awarded the Maine Support Network (MSN: a division of the newly formed Syntiro) multiple grants funded through Title IID Enhancing Education through Technology - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Competitive Grant monies.

  3. Open Educational Resources Project • The Maine Content Literacy Project (MCLP), housed at the University of Maine at Farmington, was also awarded multiple content area grants through the same Title IID funds.

  4. These grants were designed to support the MDOE in achieving the following goals: • Enhance the awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER). • Identify existing OER. • Foster the creation or development of content-specific asynchronous and synchronous communities. Our ultimate goal is to build the capacity of Maine educators to use technology, and engaging teaching and learning strategies, to prepare students for college, career, and meaningful lives in their communities

  5. Content Areas • The MDOE grants awarded to: • Syntiro were in the content areas: • Math; • Health Education & Physical Education; • World Languages; and • Career & Education Development. • MCLP were in the content areas: • Social Studies; • Science and Technology; and • English Language Arts. Additionally grants were awarded in the areas of Visual and Performing Arts, and Career & Technical Education.

  6. Open Educational Resource Team: Roles and Responsibilities • These exciting projects brought together teams of educators to identify high quality Open Educational Resources. • Educators who are experts in their content fields were identified in each of the 9 superintendent regions to form the content-specific teams.

  7. Each team identified OER criteria for quality and alignment to Maine Learning Standards to support their collection and selection of high quality OER for Maine educators. • The teams also began to note the areas where quality OER were lacking and need to be developed. • These resources are currently posted on Delicious.

  23. What is Next for These Projects?

  24. The Work Continues… • The Content Teams will continue to work with the Maine Department of Education to develop a comprehensive OER repository. • Content team members will share information regarding OER at their schools, regional events, and professional workshops and seminars.

  25. The Work Continues… • Syntiro and MCLP were also awarded Title IID professional development grants to further support Maine educators and students. • Teams of teachers associated with the Syntiro grant OER Professional Development Visual and Performing Arts Integration are developing teaching units infusing two content areas, one of which is Visual and Performing Arts, utilizing technology. • These teachers will also be providing statewide professional development to support implementation of these units. • The purpose of the MCLP grant, “OER to Improve Content Literacy and Learning”, is to develop high quality units of study that are content rich, technology rich and literacy rich. Teacher-coach teams have developed units in the content areas of science, math, social studies and English language arts. These integrated units, with embedded videos of use in classrooms, are posted on the website mainecontentliteracyproject.org.
