  1. The Test Of Discipleship Luke 9:57-62

  2. A Thoughtful Decision vv. 57-58 • Apparent, yet misguided enthusiasm • Enthusiasm must be more than momentary Mt 13:20-21 • The man was a scribe Mt 8:19 • Would he still be eager to follow after facing his fellow scribes? [Reality]

  3. A Thoughtful Decision vv. 57-58 • Jesus shocked the man with the reality of what lied ahead if he did follow • Even animals have a place to call home • The Lord’s “poverty” was self chosen… He had no roots • Such security must be given up

  4. A Thoughtful Decision vv. 57-58 • A disciple must be willing to forego any “security” the world offers • Not real anyway 1 Jn 2:15-17 • Hardships that will come must be endured 2 Tim 2:3-4, 8-13

  5. A Thoughtful Decision vv. 57-58 • This will not always be easy…all of us crave some sort of “security” • Unless one is willing to forsake such a lifestyle and live like Jesus did, he will fail this test…he can’t be a disciple Lk 14:33

  6. A Prioritized Decision vv. 59-60 • Priorities improperly ordered • Jesus taught what was most important • The request seemed valid, reasonable • After all, family doesn’t die everyday • Jesus’ reply might seem uncaring… even calloused

  7. A Prioritized Decision vv. 59-60 • Remember…Jesus knew the tendencies of the human heart Jn 2:24-25 • Man has a “tendency” to be swayed by emotional situations • What would this man have faced if he went back home first?

  8. A Prioritized Decision vv. 59-60 • The less important work of this life must be left to those who aren’t going to follow Jesus • Jesus never intended for us to neglect duties to family 1 Tim 5:8

  9. A Prioritized Decision vv. 59-60 • But when it comes to this decision, it must have top priority…even re: family • The kingdom must come first v. 60 • Once a man is dead, what more can be done for him…especially compared to preaching to those still alive?

  10. A Prioritized Decision vv. 59-60 • There are plenty of people in the world who aren’t interested in the kingdom of God (“the dead”) who can attend to the less important matters in this life

  11. A Committed Decision vv. 61-62 • A less-than-complete commitment • Like the 2nd man, this man suggested something else must be done before he could take his place among Jesus’ followers • Like the 2nd man, an emotional scene

  12. A Committed Decision vv. 61-62 • Jesus strongly states such thinking renders one “unfit” for His kingdom • One cannot look back to what was left behind • Jesus, too, left a home…never to return

  13. A Committed Decision vv. 61-62 • When one “grabs the plow” (agrees to engage in the kingdom’s work), he must not longingly pine away for what had to be given up

  14. A Committed Decision vv. 61-62 • Re: the idea of being “unfit”… • Not in the sense we are worthy to be in the kingdom Lk 17:10 • In the sense of suitability, being useful Lk 14:35 Heb 6:7

  15. A Committed Decision vv. 61-62 • Disciples are warned re: the dangers of letting earthly family keep us from God’s family • It will bring division Mt 10:34-37 • It must be relegated to 2nd place Mt 12:46-50 Lk 14:26

  16. Conclusion • We learn startling facts re: Jesus, His kingdom, & would-be disciples • The Creator had no place to lay His head • The Son of God discouraged total devotion to family

  17. Conclusion • On the surface, does this sound like something you would want to follow? • How one answers this question depends entirely on how one views life on earth

  18. Conclusion • If you seek for comforts & their security, you fail the test…no discipleship for you • If you are so bound to family you can’t do anything apart from them, you fail the test…no discipleship for you

  19. Are you willing to give up all to follow Me? Conclusion • In short, this “test” has but 1 question
