  7. Market Presence

  8. Top Brand Loyalty in DVD Players • In the 2009 Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Engagement Index, a study of 26,000 consumers which tracks 441 brands in 62 categories, Samsung ranked number one in terms brand loyalty when choosing Plasma TVs, LCD TVs and DVD players. • Top Five Brands in DVD Players • Samsung • Philips/Sony • Toshiba/JVC • Pioneer • Panasonic/Sharp

  9. Acclaimed Blu-ray and DVD Products • The Samsung BD-P2500 is the first player featured in PC World's "The Best Blu-ray Disc Players" article from March 2009. • "Our PC World Test Center judges found the Samsung's image quality simply amazing. The grades we gave it contained a few Goods, many Very Goods, and a lot of Superiors--unusual for our discriminating judges." • The BD-P4600 Blu-ray Disc player and DVD-H1080 DVD player received the Innovations Design and Engineering Award at the 2009 International CES, the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow. This award salutes consumer technology products that exhibit superiority in design and engineering.

  10. Terminology

  11. Display Terminology • Resolution • The quality of the image based on the number of horizontal lines in the image, and how often they are shown. • The most common resolutions are 480, 720 or 1080 lines. • Aspect Ratio - Refers to how wide an image is compared to how tall it is.

  12. Display Terminology (continued) • Interlaced – The signal is split into even and odd numbered lines, and the display alternates between showing odd lines then the even lines every 1/60th of a second. • Progressive – The display shows all the lines of resolution every 1/60th of a second.

  13. Tuner Terminology • Tuner – The part inside an AV device that converts an RF television transmission into audio and video signals. • NTSC (National Television System Committee) - The standard television system used in the US and other countries. • QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) - The standard for digital broadcasts through various cable providers. • ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) - The high definition Television standards for over the air broadcasts which is required by law to be included on all new televisions. • RF Modulator - A device that converts a composite signal into an RF signal, for use with televisions that do not have composite inputs.

  14. Recordable DVD Types • There are five recordable DVD formats currently available on the consumer market: • DVD-R was the first recordable DVD format introduced for consumer recordings. DVD-R discs can be written to only once. They are also available as a dual-layer disc (DVD-R DL) with additional capacity. • DVD-RW is the rewritable version of DVD-R. • DVD+R was introduced as a competing format to DVD-R. Like DVD-R, DVD+R discs can be written to only once and are also available as a dual-layer disc (DVD+R DL). • DVD+RW is the rewritable version of DVD+R. • DVD-RAM is a rewritable format primarily used for computer data storage. These discs are supported by fewer consumer devices than the other formats.

  15. DVD Recording Terminology • Initialization (also known as formatting) is the process of preparing a new blank disc to record data. There are two formatting modes commonly used in DVD recording. • Video Mode (also known as V Mode) records data onto the disc into the same format as commercially produced DVDs. This allows for greater compatibility with other players, but does not allow the data on the disc to be edited. • VR Mode records the data on this disc in a way that allows for editing the data on the disc using the recorder. However, the recorded discs can only be played back in specific DVD players that support the VR mode format.

  16. DVD Recording Terminology (continued) • Finalization is required for DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD+R discs to be played by DVD players other than the original recorder unit. Finalizing a disc adds the table of contents, information that other players need to read in order to understand how data is arranged on the disc. • DVD-RW discs can be later unfinalized to allow for additional recording or editing.

  17. Blu-ray Disc Terminology • Blu-ray Disc (BD) is an optical disc format that can offer a full-length film in high definition resolution on one disc, which is not possible with a DVD. • Blu-ray Disc supports BD-J (Blu-ray Disc Java), which allows publishers to include more interactive and sophisticated bonus content than what is available on standard DVDs. • The latest Blu-ray Disc players feature BD-Live, which allows discs supporting BD-Live to access content from their publisher over the Internet, such as online chat, online games or downloadable trailers.

  18. Region Codes • The DVD specification defines a number of regions, with the United States being included in region 1. • DVDs sold for use in region 1 are marked with the region 1 symbol on their packaging. • DVD players sold in the United States will not play DVDs sold for use in other regions.

  19. Region Codes (continued) • Blu-ray Discs also include region encoding, but have only three regions: A, B and C. • The United States is part of Region A. Blu-ray players sold in the United States will not play region B or C discs.

  20. Features

  21. EZ View Function • The EZ View function of Samsung DVD players offers several options for adjusting the displayed aspect ratio of a movie. • The available settings will vary depending upon the aspect ratio of the disc being played. • The visible effect of each setting varies depending upon the aspect ratio of the disc and the aspect ratio of the customer's television.

  22. High Definition Up-Converting HD SD Conventional DVD Up-Converting DVD Player • High definition up-converting capability over an HDMI connection is featured on most current Samsung DVD player models. • High definition up-converting takes the standard definition picture from a conventional DVD and up-converts it into a high definition format, providing an even better image than progressive scan for HDTV users. 480i/480p/720p/1080i/1080p Out 480i/480p Out Normal DVD Player

  23. Media File and DivX Playback • Many Samsung DVD products can play back media files from a PC in addition to standard DVDs and CDs. Commonly supported file formats for playback from a user-created data disc include MP3 and WMA for audio and JPEG for still photos. • Models with the DivX Playback feature can play back video files in DivX format from a user-created data disc. DivX is one of the most common formats for downloadable videos from the Internet.

  24. AllShare • For 2010 Samsung has released the AllShare function, AllShare enables the user to play music, video, and photos straight from their PC to the player. • To activate the AllShare feature the device must be connected to the PC via the network connection, and the computer must have the Samsung PC Share Manager software installed on it.

  25. USB Host Play and Media Card Slot • Models with the USB Host Play feature offer a USB port for the direct connection of a USB device (such as a flash memory drive, digital camera, or MP3 player). Media files from the device can be played back through the DVD player without needing to burn the media files to a data disc. • Some models offer a built-in media card slot, allowing media files to be played through the DVD player directly from a media card (such as an SD card or Memory Stick).

  26. Direct Copying • Combination models which include both VHS and DVD recording capability offer the customer the ability to copy from DVD to VHS or from VHS to DVD. • In addition to the advanced copying functions offered through the recorder's menu system, the customer can also take advantage of easy one-touch copying by using dedicated buttons on the remote control. • Note: This feature will not allow for the copying of store-bought movies or other commercially produced media (VHS or DVD), due to the presence of copy protection on such media. • Such copy protection is also the reason that DVD players should be directly connected to the television, without the signal passing through a VCR or other recording device.

  27. Virtual Surround Sound • Samsung's 2.1 channel home theater systems feature Virtual Surround Sound, allowing the user to experience surround sound effects without setting up additional speakers or wires.

  28. Wireless Rear Speakers • 5.1 channel home theater system models with the Wireless Rear Speaker option are compatible with a wireless rear speaker module. • The wireless rear speaker module eliminates the need to run wires across the room to the rear speakers.

  29. Internet@TV • Similar to Samsung Televisions, select Blu-Ray players, and Home Theaters now allow the user to download various applications including news updates, weather forecasts , stock market updates, games, movies, and music downloads. • By using the Samsung AppS feature of Internet@TV customers will have access to applications including AccuWeather, Blockbuster, Netflix, Pandora, Picasa, USA Today, and YouTube.

  30. Wi-Fi Ready • Select models can connect to a wireless Wi-Fi network through the use of the Samsung LinkStick accessory. • Wi-Fi access allows the use of BD-Live, Netflix streaming or Pandora streaming without the need to run a network cable to the Blu-ray Disc player.

  31. BD Wise • BD Wise is one of Samsung's inter-connectivity features, found on Blu-ray Disc players and televisions. • When a player with BD Wise is connected to a TV with BD Wise via HDMI, the original resolution of the disc will be automatically selected for output to the TV. 1080p 1080p

  32. Anynet+ • Anynet+ is a feature found on Samsung televisions, DVD players, home theater systems and Blu-ray Disc players from 2007 to present. • When devices that support Anynet+ are connected to each other using HDMI (version 1.3), the television's remote control can be used to control all of the connected devices. • Capabilities of Anynet+ also include automatically turning the TV on when another Anynet+ device begins to operate and turning another Anynet+ device off automatically when the TV is turned off.

  33. Deep Color Conventional 8-Bit Color Deep Color (up to 16-bit color) • Deep Color uses the capabilities of HDMI 1.3 to transmit color information using more data. This allows a higher number of colors to be expressed, reducing visible color gradation.

  34. Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) • Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) is a video processing engine used in many of Samsung's Blu-ray Disc players. • Through a process known as “1024-tap adaptive” up-scaling, HQV delivers premium quality up-conversion of standard definition contents.

  35. Product Lineup

  36. Product Lineup • To access the model lineup, please use the links below to access the Samsung web site. • DVD Players • Blu-Ray • Home Theater

  37. General Operation

  38. Front Panel Overview • The buttons located on the front panel of a Samsung DVD player include basic playback controls, such as play, stop, previous and next, as well as eject and power. • The front display panel displays playback time and other basic status information. On many models, the display panel is hidden in the design, visible only when in operation. • Many models include an opening panel which allows access to additional buttons or ports, while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing design when those functions are not in use.

  39. Remote Control Overview 2009 • The full set of function buttons can be found on the DVD player's remote control. • Buttons to power the player on or off and to open or close the disc tray are found towards the top of the remote control. • Most Samsung DVD remote controls include buttons for basic television controls, such as power, volume control, channel up and down, and number buttons for direct channel access. • DVD playback controls, including those not found on the main unit such as Repeat and Step, are usually located in towards the middle of the remote control. • Menu control buttons are most often located just below the playback controls. • Buttons for advanced or less frequently used functions are located at the bottom of the remote control.

  40. Remote Control Overview 2010 • The full set of function buttons can be found on the DVD player's remote control.

  41. Remote Control Overview 2010 (cont) • The remote control also acts as an input device for various features for Samsung Blu-Ray, DVD, and Home Theater systems. • If an on screen display requires the end user to input a series of numbers or letters they can use the keypad of the remote control. • By using the remote control in the same fashion as a cell phone key pad the user will be able to enter information and toggle between numbers, letters, and symbols.

  42. Playback Function Symbols • The playback control buttons on the remote control of a DVD player are marked with industry standard symbols. In some cases, text labels are not on the remote control, only the standard symbols. • Play ( ): Begins or resumes normal speed playback. • Pause ( ): Temporarily stops playback and freezes the onscreen image. Playback resumes from the point of pausing. • Play and Pause are often located on the same button ( ). • Stop ( ): Completely stops playback. Most menu functions and settings changes required that the disc be stopped. • Next ( ): Skips to the next scene or track. • Previous ( ): Skips to the previous scene or track. • Forward Search ( ): Increases playback speed. Sometimes the same button as Next. • Reverse Search ( ): Reverses playback and increases speed of reverse playback. Sometimes the same button as Previous.

  43. Additional Function Symbols • Industry standard symbols not related to playback may also appear on the DVD player's remote control. • Power ( ): Turns the unit on or off. • Open / Close ( ): Opens or closes the disc tray. • During operation, symbols such as a circle with a line through it or a raised hand may appear when the customer attempts to take an action like changing the angle or subtitles during playback. • The appearance of such symbols does not indicate a problem with the DVD player. Their appearance indicates that the action the customer is trying to take is not available in the current operation mode or is not offered by the disc being played.

  44. Initial Settings • When the DVD/HTS/Blu-Ray is first purchased and powered on, the Initial Settings function automatically activates. This function walks the customer through basic setup options such as the aspect ratio and networking.

  45. Menu System Overview 2009 • In general, most of the functions of a DVD player are located directly on the remote control, with only the most advanced or infrequently used settings requiring the customer to access the menu system. • To access the menu, the customer must press Stop ( ) to put the disc in Stop mode. • When available, "Disc Menu" and "Title Menu" provide shortcuts to the menus on the DVD; these are not player settings menus.

  46. Menu System Overview 2010 • To access the menu, the customer must press Stop ( ) to put the disc in Stop mode. • When available, "Disc Menu" and "Title Menu" provide shortcuts to the menus on the DVD; these are not player settings menus. • Unlike previous models, the menu structure for 2010 models requires the user to press the left and right directional key to select from the different categories.

  47. Connections

  48. Video Connection Review Chart Best Better Good

  49. Composite Video Connection TV Rear Panel DVD Player Rear Panel • The most common connection for basic DVD playback is to use composite video and analog audio, which are usually included with the DVD player. • Many current television feature multiple sets of input jacks, and often include a set of output jacks; when connecting the DVD player to an available set of jacks, make sure not to connect to output jacks.

  50. RF Modulators DVD Player Rear Panel TV Rear Panel • If the customer is connecting the DVD player to a television that only has an RF input, they will need to use an additional device known as an RF modulator. • The RF modulator takes the composite video and analog audio signals coming from the DVD player, and converts them into an RF signal for connection to the television using an RF cable. • Most RF modulators place the DVD signal on RF channel 3 or channel 4, and allow the customer to choose which of these channels is used.
