Assessment challenges • Purpose of conference: • Focus on assessment & its benefits in 2007 • New policy for Assessment in Grades R - 9 • New annexure to FET Qualifications Framework - Assessment Protocol • Common construct/ understanding of intention and value of assessment as NCS is implemented

Assessment in the NCS Conceptual understanding of assessment • linked to shift in curriculum • from content-based curriculum to • process being as important as content • purpose of process & content is to attain critical & learning outcomes • Process of assessment is as important as the results of the assessment • process of assessment provides a mechanism for understanding & engaging with the curriculum for both teacher & learner • Content-based testing restricted teachers to what they had taught learners - assessment in NCS needs to explore the learner’s understanding, thinking processes etc + knowledge

Assessment Implementation Challenges - Systemic • Change - experience & management • Common understanding of way forward • Knowledge, competency and experience of teachers & officials • Concept of assessment • Concept & implementation of Progression • Language competency • Opportunities for learners to spend time on learning
