  1. Engineering DesignGrade 12 How is this course different from grade 11? The construction is more difficult. There is less direct instruction. There are fewer worksheets. There is more opportunity to alter the course to suit your needs and interests.

  2. Engineering Design is mainly .... a collection of facts a collection of theories a collection of skills something else .... what?

  3. Mini-Contest #1 You have a set of 6 plastic cups. Your challenge is to stack them into a pyramid. You may not touch the cups directly. You will use an elastic band with four strings attached. You may only touch the loops at the end. You may not talk.

  4. Types of Communication It took a while before the groups figured out how to work together. It was especially hard, because you weren’t allowed to talk. On the whiteboard, list the different ways that you can communicate in a group.

  5. Contests and Group Work Usually one person in a group is dominant. They handle the equipment more and speak more. In your group, that person claimed _______% of the group’s space and time. A) 90% B) 75% C) 60% D)45% How can you make this more even?

  6. Mini-Contest #2 Stack the cups to make the tallest tower. How was the group interaction? A) More even. B) Same. C) Less even.

  7. Group Intelligence A study found a group IQ and explored what factors affected it. Which was most important? A) cohesion, satisfaction, motivation B) IQ; average and maximum C) gender, even speaking time, social sensitivity D) All three were equally important. Woolley, A. W., Chabris, C. F., Pentland, A., Hashmi, N., & Malone, T. W. (2010). Evidence for a Collective Intelligence Factor in the Performance of Human Groups. Science, 330(6004), 686-688

  9. Mini-Contest #3 Design Specifications: Cut a standard piece of paper so it remains in one piece but a person can go through it. Brainstorm for 5 minutes. Then cut.

  10. Reflecting on Group Work What role do you tend to take in a group? A) Dictator B) Manager C) Helper D) Observer What can you do to improve your role?

  11. Experiences of past students I thought researcher was a useless job but throughout grade 12 I realized how important the job really is. The researcher saves so much valuable testing time. I initially dreaded the role of publicist. It is the exact opposite of the building and leading that I joined the course to do, but in the end it was the most rewarding. I have more enthusiasm for being a leader now because I have learnt how to recognize specific skills in people and make use of them. I am more confident voicing my opinions and making sure that other opinions are heard. I was surprised how much I liked being a draftsman and drawing diagrams. I was not someone who was very artistic. I remember being told that my drawings were good and I was pleasantly surprised.

  12. Unconscious Biases

  13. Unconscious Biases What other biases might you and other students in this class hold, that will affect group interactions. How can you reduce these biases?

  14. Mini-Contest #4 Design Specifications: Use a standard sheet of paper to support a textbook as high off the table as possible. Measurements will be to the lowest point. Brainstorm for 5 minutes. Then cut.

  15. Nabiha One of 50 Ontario Students http://www.wemadeit.ca/community/projects/brand-website/

  16. Callum, Emily, Martin, NuzhaT, Abida, Tafria York University Biophysics Project: First Place, Hon. Mention

  17. Evan and Max 2015National Science Fair: Simulating Evolution

  18. Calvin and Massum 2016 National Science Fair: Monitoring Gait

  19. Caitlyn and Turna WEGo.Design Competition: 2nd Place

  20. Frank and Andre Sage International: First Place!

  21. What are the projects this year? Roller Coaster Build Roller Coaster Design Frankenstein Hydraulic Arms Ping Pong Projector Trebuchet

  22. The existing projects involve: Inexpensive materials A key physics concept or math skill Reasonable construction skills However they lack: Connections to real-world problems Biology and chemistry concepts Artistic qualities Individual Choice

  23. What are some new possibilities? Prosthetic Leg Solar Heating Solar Oven Space Suit Cleaning Oil Spills Cleaning Water Chairs Heart Valve Portable Wheel Chair Ramp

  24. Consider the new contests and discuss which three should be added and why. Email your choices and reasoning to roberta.tevlin @tdsb.on.ca
