HIV is a retrovirus directly and indirectly destroys CD4+ T (lymphocytes) cells of the Human Immune system • Acute HIV Syndrome is followed by AIDS within a matter of few years ranging from 5-15 years. • The Clinical progress can be assessed on the basis of CD4 count and Viral Load. Normal CD4 count – Apprx. 1200 per cubic ml of blood (Below 200 categorized as AIDS)

  3. THE COURSE OF HIV INFECTION • TYPICAL PROGRESSOR’S - Median Survival time 10 years • RAPID PROGRESSOR’S • Median Survival time 3-4 years • LONG TERM NON-PROGRESSOR’S - More than 15 years. (Incubation period of HIV is 2 wks to 9 months)

HIV TESTS • HIV Proviral RT-PCR Test – Earliest Test for HIV Viral RNA detected in Blood within 72 hrs of viral entry into the human system. • Other tests – P24 antigen detection & ELISA Test and Western Blot assay HIV antibodies detection. • VIRAL LOAD Test measures the amount of free viral RNA in 1 ml of blood
