  2. Definition of Diversity • Diversity is the recognition and respect of all differences that exist in individuals with respect to gender, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, physical characteristics, sexual orientation, and disability.

  3. What Is the Montgomery County Diversity Council? The diversity council is an advisory group to the CAO and OHR comprised of representatives from county departments, employee associations, special population groups, community liaisons and organizations. • .

  4. What is the purpose of the Council? • The Council strives to create an environment of conscious acceptance, education, and inclusion of diversity within Montgomery County. • It works to ensure that all employees and those we serve are afforded equal opportunity in all areas of employment, programs and services provided by the County.

  5. How does the Council carry out its objectives? • The Council is advised of OHR's progress in implementing its diversity-related goals, and provides assistance in achieving these goals when appropriate, in addition to communicating this progress to the Chief Administrative Officer. • The Council also serves as a communications link with employees and community groups on diversity matters.

  6. Council By-Laws • The operational procedures of the Council are located in the by-laws. • The by-Laws are located in the Diversity Plan and on-line (http://portal.mcgov.org) in the OHR Resource Library under the heading ‘EEO-Diversity’.

  7. When was the Council established? • The Council was established in 1997 as an element of the County’s Workforce Diversity Program (Diversity Plan) that is under the auspices of the Office of Human Resources.

  8. Who are members of the Diversity Council? • Members and their alternates are County employees, who serve at the direction of their Department Directors or Agency Heads, as well as representatives from employee associations and community organizations.

  9. How is the Council organized? • The Diversity Council has a Chair and Vice Chair who are elected annually and serve for one year. • The Council organizes into ad hoc committees to address issues pertinent to the Council’s mission.

  11. How often does the Council meet? • The Council meets on the third Wednesday of every month. All members are expected to attend or send their alternate if necessary.
