Internet Events in Vietnam • “.vn” registered by National Information Institute in 1994 • Email commercial service provided in 1995 through dial-up connection • Trial Internet connectivity : 1996 • Officially joined global Internet and commercial service lauched : 1997 • Member of Asia Pacific Network Information Centre : 1998 • Vietnam Network Information Centre found in 2001 • Broadband Internet service (DSL) lauched in July 2003 • Vietnam Internet eXchange Point found in 2003 October

Internet figures My Company (VNPT) : • Dial-up subscribers : 410.000 • Dial-up subscriber utilisation : 720 minutes / 1 month / 1 dial-up sub • Leased line subscribers : 500 • ADSL subscribers : 6.000. Up to 2005, VNPT is planning to reach 200.000 xDSL, focusing on broadband services • Global Internet connectivity bandwith: 605Mbps; growth rate : 200% / 5 months

  8. Internet figures In Vietnam, dial-up subscriber growth rate : • 1997 : 1000(Internet service lauched in November) • 1998 : 17.000 • 1999 : 45.000 • 2000 : 70.000 …. • And now (10/2003) : 705.000

  9. Internet figures In Vietnam, now : • Dial-up subscribers : 705.000 • Internet end-users : 2.49 millions • Internet end-users/100 habitants : 3.05% • Internet end-users growth rate : 200% / 1 year • Nearly 4,300 domain name under “.vn”

  10. Internet figures In Vietnam, pricing for dial-up (per hour, U$D) : • 1997/1998 : 1.6 U$D / 1 hour • 1999 : 1.3 U$D / 1 hour • 2000 : 1.08 U$D / 1 hour • 2001 : 0.8 U$D / 1 hour …. • And now (10/2003) : ..

Internet figures • And now (10/2003), Internet access prices in market : Dial-up floor price : 0.17 U$D/ 1 hour (regulated by Gov) Average price in market : 0.39 U$D / 1 hour Local telephone charging for dial-up: 0.15U$D/hour (regulated by Gov) ADSL connection (upload 2Mbps, download 512Kbps) charging based on volume. Maximum price is under 64.5 U$D / month (full time connection)

Internet International connectivities From 1997 to 5/2003, growth rate : • 11/1997 : 4M vµ 256K •  4/2000 : 8Mbps vµ 256K • 12/2001 : 42Mbps • 8/2002 : 145Mbps • 5/2003 : 300Mbps Growth rate increased slowly And now : • 605Mbps connected to global Internet Planning : more than 1 Gbps in Feb 2004 Forcasting : International bandwidth growth rate 200% in a period of 5 months

Making suggestions and planning based on rec d.50 Creating the exchange Point in South Eath Asia Nations : • Hub point • exchange traffics : announce IP blocks, Autonomous System Numbers Connecting to other Asia nations : • China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia, etc • Connect to Europe (LINX, for instance), Africa

Making suggestions and planning based on rec d.50 Our goal to be fair with US carriers Why needs to be found an Asia Pacific Internet eXchange Point: • Internet trafics increased nearly balanced between regions • Asia Pacific Region has not yet found any regional Internet exchange point • Most of the transit traffics between countries are United State • Save money for nations by applying technique such as caching, etc. • Representative to negotiate with other regions, US carriers • Make full use of fible optics (SEA-ME-WE3, CSC, etc)
