  10. Classroom Rules • Handout folder at right of lectern • What to call the instructor? Either Don or Dr. Hartmann is OK. But not Mr. Hartmann or Hey you! • Late Comers:Avoid walking down the center of the classroom; instead walk down side of room until you find a seat. • If you must leave early, tell me before class and sit near the door. • Names: Use your first name when asking/answering a question • Turn off cell phones • No self-selected making out

Rules of the Game • See relevant section on WEBsite • General principles • Class of what we scientifically know about adolescents (the folks) and theoretical speculations about what this might mean • Please, no fair supporting your arguments with religious appeals • Deal with hot issues with sensitivity, and possibly light humor • Again, be sensitive to the feelings of others

  12. Office Hours, etc. • Office Hours: TTh 11:00‑12:00, W 11:45-1:00 • I like visitors—for any sensible reason—including information about graduate school, how to beat the system, recipes for interesting food, advice about child rearing etc.

  13. Text/Lectures Required Text: Santrock's Adolescence (10th edit.), 2005. • My lectures will not come from the text ‑‑ they may amplify text material, supplements it, or disagree with it. But my lectures will not cover all of the material in the text. But all of the text is your responsibility. • The text has a lot of interesting features: good introductions and summaries of important points; glossary with new terms defined; interesting graphics and cartoons, and generally good substance. Also, check out the index at end of book—very useful. • Some of you may want to get the Study Guide to complement the text—or you may win one by visiting me!

  18. Class Participation Check the handout • Complex • My experimental method of inducing you to get things done on time • Requires your participation (and record keeping). If our records disagree, the instructor has the edge • I will call on 2-3 randomly selected classmates each class period. If you are not present when your name is called, I will deduct 2 points from your class participation total.

  19. Syllabus Highlights: Extra-credit • Serving as class TA (see handout) • Complete a supplemental project • Participate in WEB discussions • Engaging in cooperative learning (i.e., editing). I forgot to mention that you can earn up to 3exam points for editing someone’s supplemental or autobiographical term paper. • Miscellaneous: E.g., e-mailing me cartoons for the class; writing congresspersons; writing film/book reports; visiting the professor

Requirements: Exams • Exams (Weight: 60%--20% for each of 3): 3 regular midterm exams (MC + Essay), & 1 optional final comprehensive MC exam • 80% of MC exam questions come from study guides, so everyone should receive at least a B- on every quiz • No other make-up exams other than the one scheduled during final exam week • Highest scorer = 100%;90-99% As; 80-89% Bs; 70-79% Cs; etc. • Count highest 3 exams • Non-frivolous appeals always possible • Review session prior to each midterm

  21. My Effort (1) I want your experience in Psychology 1230 to be successful. To that end I will do at least the following: • use your input for determining the content of the class • make study guides available and take much of the quiz content from the study guides • give you the opportunity to appeal your answers to quiz items—or most anything else • schedule an optional makeup quiz • offer you multiple opportunities to gain extra credit

My Effort (2) • schedule 3 hours of office hours weekly for discussions of anything relevant to the class or to your own development; • facilitate your getting acquainted with your class members; • encourage you to use my office hours; and • put the lectures on PowerPoint slides and make them—or a reasonable facsimile—available prior to the class when they are delivered. The rest is up to you! If you should find yourself falling behind, please let me listen to your story, and attempt to help you get straightened out.
