  3. Your SAA User ID and PIN • You should have received a letter from the Office of Admission and Registrar this summer with your SAA User ID and PIN. If not, go to OAR (MU200). • Used for a number of UCSF computing resources: • Online Registration & Study List filing • GALEN (Library) account • WebCT account • Virtual Private Network (VPN) account

  4. Student IT Services • Most services provided by: • Campus Library • Student Academic Affairs (SAA) • Information Technology Services (ITS) • Information can be found at the following URL: http://saawww.ucsf.edu/newstudent

  5. Remote Access Options • UCSF RAS (Remote Access Services) • Free, but only 460 ports • 56K (v.90) Dialup Service • No toll-free access number • Instructions at http://its.ucsf.edu/information/network/ras/ • Private ISP (Internet Service Provider) • Not free • Not part of UCSF Network • Must use the VPN to access UCSF resources • BUT, a much better option!

  6. Private ISPs • PLEASE, not AOL!!! • AT&T, Earthlink, SBC are pretty good • UCSF has a contract with AT&T • 56K Dialup Service • Unlimited usage • Toll Free access in North America • $14.09 per month • Info at: http://its.ucsf.edu/information/network/dialup.jsp • Broadband Connection (DSL/Cable Modem) Preferable

  7. VPN - Virtual Private Network • Provides secure remote connectivity to the UCSF Network • Gives you access to “UC/UCSF Only” resources • Example: http://www.library.ucsf.edu/db • You must already have an ISP • Must install a software client on your computer • Instructions/software available on Student Resource CD and for download at: http://its.ucsf.edu/information/network/index.jsp

  8. WIRELESS Internet Access! • Available at numerous campus locations: http://its.ucsf.edu/information/network/wireless/ • 802.11b standard (shared 10MBPS) • Most newer laptops have wireless built in • If not, costs about $25 - $50 • PCMCIA Cards available at The Source and virtually all other computer stores

  9. Free “Exchange” e-mail account • First.Last@ucsf.edu • Outlook Web Access https://exchange.ucsf.edu • E-Mail Address (Login): SAA UserID (usually) • Password: Initially random – suggest change to PIN • Exchange can send secure e-mail • Put PHI: , ePHI: , or Secure: in Subject Heading

As of this academic year, all UCSF Schools and administrative units require use and maintenance of your campus-assigned e-mail address • Listservs – Campus and School • Check with individual faculty • General communication • Attachments (papers, presentations, etc.) • “Proper Use” issues • Privacy and Security

FERPA(Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) • Email address release • Primary (UCSF) email address • Secondary (private) email address • We suggest that you allow your primary email address to be released -- This will allow faculty and fellow students to reach you through the UCSF “Global Address List”

  12. HIPAA • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act • Privacy Rule • Went into effect April 14, 2003 • Concerns the use/disclosure of PHI • Security Rule • Went into effect April 21, 2005 • Concerns the use/storage/transmission of e-PHI

  15. Activating your GALEN (Library) Account • Go to http://account.library.ucsf.edu/activate • Enter your SAA User ID and PIN • Click “Next” to Login • Choose a “secret!” • Name of your pet, town you grew up in, etc. • Verify your email address • Click “Activate Account” button, then Logout
