  2. The teacher understands the importance of reading for understanding, knows the components of comprehension, and teaches children strategies for improving their comprehension.

  3. Reading Comprehension • Teach students to decode well. • Time to read during school day. • Text that are easy for them. • Time to discuss what they read. • So that decoding becomes easy.

  4. Background Knowledge • Prior knowledge affects reading comprehension. • If you are familiar with a topic you will be able to understand it better than if you did not know anything about the subject.

  5. Pre-Reading Activities • Identify interests in children and find appropriate stories to math their intersts. • Make unfamiliar topics familiar by pre-reading activities. • Develop new prior knowledge. • Spend a lot of time pre-reading.

  6. Setting the Purpose for Reading • Gain an overview of the text before reading. • Make predictions. • Read selectively. • Generate Questions

  7. Linking Prior Knowledge to New Knowledge • Relate new factual information to prior knowledge. • Use questioning techniques. • Through conversations children are able to compare their predictions and expectations about content.

  8. Story Grammar • Setting • Characters • Problem encounter by characters. • Attempts at solution to the problem. • Successful solutions. • Ending

  9. Use • Graphic Organizers • Introduce various components of literature. • Assessment tool. • Check for comprehension. • Children • Read critically. • Text portrayed subject matter. • Compare and contrast the subject matter. • Different versions of a story.
