  1. The History of Sociology “Social Thinkers”

  2. The History of Sociology Throughout history people have always been social thinkers, making observations about people and human behaviour. Philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle were engaged in theories around many aspects of human behaviour but unlike future Sociologist they provided theories on what society ought to be like rather than describing how society actually was.

  3. As time passes human knowledge and exploration of ourselves progressed. During the scientific revolution of the 17th century and early 18th century, known as the Age of Enlightenment or Age of Reasoning, Europeans began to place an emphasis on the individuals possession of critical reasoning and experience. During this time it was also decided that an individual's pursuit of knowledge would be of benefit to society as a whole. Although the social thinkers of the time were progressing they lacked a systematic , scientific approach to understanding human behaviour and its impact on society.

  4. The idea of observing how people lived in order to find out what they thought, and doing so in a systematic manner that could be verified did not take hold until the late 18th early 19th century. People realized that philosopher’s theories of what ought to be no longer seemed relevant.

  5. During the 19th century the Industrial Revolution occurred. During this time massive, economic and social changes occurred as we went from nations based on agriculture to those based on manufacturing. As part of this change many people left their rural homes and headed to the cities. With urbanization came new social problems: inadequate housing, crowding, unsanitary conditions, poverty, pollution, and crime. As these conditions became more visible, a new breed of social thinkers develop.

  6. The Development of Modern Sociology At the same time that urban problems were growing worse, natural scientists had been using reason, or rational thinking, to discover the laws of physics and the movement of the planets. Social thinkers started to believe that, by applying the methods developed by natural sciences, they might discover the laws of human behaviour and apply these laws to solve social problems.
