Approaching The TopicPredicting, Pg. 101 • Look at the ads for cleaning products from a magazine for women in the 1950s. 1. What are the women in the ads doing? 2. How do you think they feel? Why? 3. Do you think their smile is genuine? Why?
About the unit“Women’s work?” • This unit is about housework and how it is assigned for women to do. It also discusses the difference between who did chores in the past and who does them nowadays. It also implies the idea that men and women should share housework. • The unit introduces a poem, which gives a sarcastic overview of some TV ads in which producers of some cleaning products try to make housework look like an easy and funny job, just to sell their products, while it never is.

Reading one: Housework • Reading one is a poem, by Sheldon Harnick, which discusses some TV commercials about cleaning products in a derisive way. It shows how the advertisers of these ads try to convince the viewers that house work, which is normally hard labor, can be a pleasant and enjoyable task by using these products.
Reading For Main Ideas. Pg. 106 Check (√) the two main ideas in the poem: ___ 1. TV commercials (advertisements on TV) give us good information about which soaps and detergents are best. ___ 2. Men and women should share housework. ___ 3. Children shouldn’t watch TV because there are too many commercials. ___ 4. Housework isn’t really too much fun.

Reading two: Good Bye to (some) Housework. • Reading Two is an article about the changes in the types of housework done in ten years. People do less housework nowadays as they don’t have time, and they discovered that some housework chores are less important to be done. However, some housework chores are still regularly done.
After going through Reading Two, try to check your understanding by answering the following questions: • Why are people doing less housework now? • Which chore(s) are people doing less often? • Which chore(s) do people do as often today?

Focus on WritingStyle : Poetry, pg. 113 • A poem is a piece of writing which expresses thoughts or feelings. Poems usually include the use of irony and symbolism. Poems usually consist of verses and may or may not rhyme. • A poem consists of many stanzas. A stanza is a set of lines in a poem, set apart from other sets of lines by space. Each stanza comprises its own unit. The break/space between stanzas generally indicates a pause between thoughts, concepts or actions.
Focus on Writing(cont…)Style : Poetry My chicken's on the Internet. She surfs the web all day. I've tried to stop her browsing but, so far, there's just no way. She jumps up on the mouse and then she flaps around like mad to click on every hyperlink and every pop-up ad. She plays all sorts of chicken games. She messages her folks. She watches chicken videos and forwards chicken jokes. I wouldn't mind so much except my keyboard's now a wreck. She hasn't learned to type yet; she can only hunt and peck. Look at the poem on the right. Note the words in red. You’ll find them sound the same, cause they rhyme.
