  1. Steps To Precision Agriculture By Benedict T. Palen, Jr. There is a lot of potential with precision agriculture, but also a lot of hype in some instances. Some farmers may get the sense that the journey can be fast, and the results just as quickly realized. The reality can be very different.

  2. Steps To Precision Agriculture By Benedict T. Palen, Jr. The precision AG task is a marathon, not a sprint, and before undertaking the effort, a farmer should ask himself these questions:

  3. How comfortable am I with tech • What has been the basis for my agronomic program the last five years—seed choices, fertility, irrigation (as applicable), crop rotations • Do I have yield monitoring equipment, GPS or RTK on tractors and sprayers • How do my crop yields compare to others in the area • What records are available as to soil types, and have soil tests been taken—frequency and results • How well does my financial accounting integrate with my crop record keeping; can I drill down to field level details on costs and returns • Have my landlords inquired about my use of ag tech

  4. It’s really of critical importance that the ag tech journey begins with a zone level knowledge of soils across each field. It is from that base that many other things flow. The zone mapping can be done with a VERIS cart, for example, and then those zone maps can be overlain with crop yield histories for each field, whether the latter are generalized in nature, or specific by way of a yield monitor in the combine. The next step in this journey will be covered in a subsequent report.
