  1. The Science Behind… BioPlastic

  2. A basic component of plastic is a large molecule called polymer. These polymers are bonded together by many monomers. It is long chains of polymers that make up plastic. Thecatalyst.org

  3. Starch is comprised of two different things: amylase and amylopectin. B2bagri.com

  4. Amylase is the type of polymer that we want and is long and straight. Amylopectin is shorter and branched causing plastic to be brittle. classofood.com

  5. It is because of this that we must chemically enhance the properties of the starch. Using the method of acid hydrolysis, vinegar is added to break down the branches of the amylopectin, making it less brittle. bathew.com

  6. Next, we add a plasticizing agent, glycerine. This procedure is likened to adding butter to noodles. Butter lubricates the noodles and make them less sticky. If you wanted your plastic to be more pliable, you would add more glycerine. Lowcarbluxury.com

  7. Combining these components and adding heat allows the mixture to develop into a plastic-like substance that can effectively be turned into everyday items otherwise made of petroleum. Asia.ru
