  1. Common Dental Problems That Require Orthodontist Help While we all are very nicely aware of term orthodontics, it is also important to be informed of the way they treat dental problems. The job of Richmond Hill orthodontist involves correcting crooked teeth and misaligned jaws of children, it is the responsibility of the parents to make sure that problems are recognized and their kids see orthodontists at an early age. Orthodontic treatment can be done at any age, but it is easy for the orthodontist to treat a problem and help to correct wrong habits at a growing age. This should be done as early as possible because the problems become more complex with ageing. According to a survey, the advisable age to take your kids to an orthodontist is after seven. At this age malformations in their teeth and jaws can be predicted easily by looking at the facial structure. Even if the problems have not begun yet, they can do this by looking at patient’s dental x-rays and genetic studies (if available). Yes, the most common orthodontic problem, called malocclusion or ‘bad bite’, is often a genetic problem. It can also be caused by poor dental hygiene, wrong habits, early or delayed loss of baby teeth, poor nutrition and accidents. Other medical conditions such as birth defects and trauma can also cause bad bite. Sometimes you may need to see an oral surgeon to get rid of these problems. Let us have a look on common orthodontic problems that can affect you or your kid: Under bite: is an orthodontic condition where the lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw, causing the front teeth to overlap the counterpart front top. Open bite: the basic issue with this kind of dental disorder is that the front teeth, both upper and lower are forced outward impacting the chewing of the patient. The extent of misalignment is that both upper and lower jaws do not touch each other and patient’s smile is adversely affected. Overbite: the term overbite does not refer to a specific condition, rather it is an excess or absent malocclusion which is generally expressed in percentage. When in excess, it lowers front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth. Cross bite: also known as negative overjet, this can involve single teeth or a group of teeth. In this, the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth, which may cause misaligned jaw growth. Crowding: it occurs when teeth have not enough room to burst forth from the gum. Crowding can often be corrected by expansion, and sometimes it requires surgery. Protrusion: it is characterized by the upper teeth prolonging too far forward or the lower teeth not extending enough forward. This problem often impacts the appearance and functioning of teeth. Misaligned Dental Midlines: it is often caused when the lower jaw does not fit and match appropriately, which may negatively impact jaw, causing improper dental function. Widely Spaced Teeth: Spacing problems may be caused because of missing teeth, or may a cosmetic issue. Moreover, your kid should be consulted to child orthodontist because ‘prevention is better than cure’. For more information, visit www.benbassatortho.com
