  1. SEWAGE TREATMENT AN ASSESSMENT OF VARIOUS TECHNOLOGIESDr. Ananth S. KodavasalEcotech Engineering Consultancy Pvt. Ltd.1 February 06, 2013

  2. WHAT STARTED IT ALL OFF ? • Classical, Conventional EAAS • Anaerobic STP’s • CAACO • EADOX • SBR • MBBR • MBR 2

  3. Classical, Conventional EAAS • STP GUIDE PUBLISHED BY KSPCB 3

  4. ANAEROBIC STP • NOT FIT FOR URBAN RES. COMPLEXES • Foul odour • Black colouration • Black solid particles • Unfit for “Urban Reuse” • 3 STP’s modified 200 KLD ; 350 KLD ; 500 KLD 4

  5. EADOX • ELECTROCOAGULATION • Akin to Chemical Coagulation • Removes only solids/ colloids • Does not remove dissolved organics • Unsustainable electrode costs • 6 STP’s studied – All defunct 6

  6. SBR • SEQUENCING BATCH REACTOR • No problems with Technology • Issues with Design, Engineering • Issues with critical, Mandatory Equipment • Issues related to sludge handling • Min. Guidelines for Design, Engg. submitted 7

  7. SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONS

  8. MOTORISED DECANTER

  9. MBBR • MOVING BED BIOFILM REACTOR • No problems with Technology • Issues with Design, Engineering • Issues related to primary sedimentation • Issues related to sludge handling • Min. Guidelines for Design, Engg. submitted 8

  10. FLOWSHEET 1

  11. PLASTIC CARRIER MEDIA 1

  12. MBR • MEMBRANE BIOREACTOR • Emerging Technology ( of future) • High operating costs • Several unresolved issues • Subject of serious R&D • Not suitable for India under present state of development 8

  13. FLOWSHEET 1

  14. TYPICAL MEMBRANE CASSETTES

  15. Contd.

  16. SUMMARY, CONCLUSION • From a long term perspective, EAAS is still the Best Available, Practicable Technology • Anaerobic, CAACO, EADOX unsuitable • SBR may be considered with T&C ## • MBBR may be considered with T&C ## • MBR is for the future, when all current issues are resolved ## Pls. see Guidelines submitted to KSPCB 9
