LA statutory responsibilities The Government’s general approach is to give local authorities freedom and flexibility to fulfil their statutory duties. ..to encourage, enable or assist young people’s participation in education or training. .. support vulnerable young people to engage in education and training, intervening early with those at risk of disengagement …good mechanisms for tracking young people’s participation in order to identify those who need support. ..continue to maintain close links with Jobcentre Plus Source: Statutory Guidance for Local Authorities on Targeted Support Services for Young People, April 2011

Raising the Participation Age The Education and Skills Act 2008 increases the minimum age at which young people in England can leave learning, requiring them to continue in education or training until: • The end of the academic year in which they turn 17 from 2013 • Until their 18th birthday from 2015

Skills and Employability Team PARTICIPATION: • Continue to work on transition planning with Connexions • Build “kentchoices4u” services to deliver statutory responsibilities by: • Providing the information young people need to make informed choices. • Expanding the age group of those who can apply online from 16-18 to assist tracking and the identification of vulnerable learners. • Supporting interoperability between data sources holding data on young people. • Including more employment, apprenticeship and training opportunities for young people to access on the Area Prospectus. • Supplying a range of cost effective, electronic services that providers, young people and parents/carers can use to support decision making. • Exploring the potential for new social medias to communicate directly with young people. • Developing “kentchoices4u live”, to include a range of activities that facilitate face to face interaction, for example CEIAG masterclasses.
