  1. Naming Covalent compounds

  2. Covalent Bonds • Covalent bonds result from the sharing of electron pairs between two atoms. • Covalent bonds always form between two nonmetals.

  3. Covalent Bonding

  4. Naming Covalent Compounds • Covalent compounds are named using prefixes to indicate the number of atoms. • 1 = Mono • 2 = Di • 3 = Tri • 4 = Tetra • 5 = Penta • 6 = Hexa • 7 = Hepta • 8 = Octo • 9 = Nona • 10 = Deca

  5. Naming Covalent Compounds • 1. The less-electronegative atom is listed first. • Atom is given proper prefix, mono is not used. • End of element’s name is not changed. • 2. The more-electronegative atom is listed second. • Atom is given proper prefix, mono is used. • End of element’s name is replaced with –ide. • Note: Drop the o or a at the end of a prefix if the word following the prefix starts with a vowel.

  6. Naming Covalent Compounds – Examples • N2O - Dinitrogen monoxide • NO - Nitrogen monoxide • NO2 - Nitrogen dioxide • N2O3 - Dinitrogen trioxide • N2O5 -Dinitrogenpentoxide • Complete the practice problems for naming covalent compounds.
