  2. Network Design Decisions: • Convergence – a single infrastructure for • Data • Voice • Video • Is the technology mature and reliable enough? • Yes – Some examples • EMM Office – VOIP for > 2 years • Dartmouth – WVOIP • Northwestern – Video over IP

  3. Implications of Convergence • Demand for high network bandwidth • Cat6 handles Gigabit on copper • High bandwidth switches • High bandwidth backbone • High reliability & uptime requirements • Data technology has improved • Employ redundancy • Technology interfaces needed • Voice & video gateways available

  4. Benefits of Convergence • Need to support only one technology • Less expensive • Less training of staff required • Fewer vendors need be involved • Better integration of applications • High rate of innovation in converged technology • New models will be less expensive in the future with more capacity & features • New applications & technologies will be available

  5. Net Design Decisions • Install Cat6 cabling – Copper 1Gigabit capable • 2-3 times the number of drops on building plans • No fiber (expensive, NICs expensive, cu is capable) • one coax drop to classrooms (video servers expensive) • Install Gigabit switches, high bandwidth backbone • Use fiber between main & individual network rooms • Install Voice over IP gateway, use IP Phones • Phone changes are done via a web page rather than wiring changes • Install Video Servers • Allow TV viewing over IP, use PCs & video projectors

  6. Wireless Net Design Decisions • Install one Wireless Access Point (AP) per Equip. Room to cover hallways and common areas near by. • Install three APs in the big auditorium. Note the 312 wired connections available. Midlevel APs often support 100 users. Users unsatisfied with their bandwidth (wireless APs are shared devices) can use a dedicated wired connection. • APs use the Virtual LAN features of the switches to route all AP traffic through the wireless authentication (like Blue Socket ) before entering the network.

  7. External Connections • Internet Service • T1 is probably insufficient bandwidth but T3 is about what all of KU uses now • Three T1s would probably be adequate • Expect a lot of traffic to main campus • Possible to use this for VOIP to main campus • Telephone Service • T1 service to local provider (24 voice lines) • Probably a fiber connection to provider

  12. New Building Network Infrastructure Recommendation • A state-of-the-art network infrastructure • Provides necessary services – Data, Voice, Video • Can accommodate new services • Lower future operational and maintenance costs • Initial equipment costs – about $280,000 • Additional end user equipment needed • IP Telephones • Personal Computers – Office, Classrooms, Labs • Initial equipment costs – about $250,000
