  1. Journal • Why weekends should be longer….. • Sit where you like, like where you sit

  2. JOURNAL • If you were going to make a first impression how would that look for: • Teacher • New Friend • Parent’s friends • Boss • President of the US

  3. Good News • TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD……

  4. Lesson 10- First Impressions pg. 27 • Objective: • Understand the importance of first impressions • Identify the eight cues that form an initial impression • Write a letter to the school principal describing their thoughts about Teen Leadership

  5. Meeting and Greeting Others • Small Group Discussion • Think about how you see self-confidence and how you can tell if someone has self-confidence. Write your answer on page 27, share in your group. • If you have it or if you don’t, it will show! • Others will see it, feel it, and sense it. Even though we may not be able to actually see self-confidence, it is presented in lots of subtle ways to the people around us. Does this make sense? • When you first meet someone, that person has no way or really knowing if you have self-confidence, if you are good at what you do, if you are intelligent, or if you are a good person, etc. • They rely on cues to help them form opinions about you.

  6. First Impression-pg. 28 You have only 30 seconds to make a first impression! Additional encounters But it takes approximately 20 additional encounters to undo or change a bad first impression!

  7. Cue #1 • Eye contact: indicator of position and reflects a sense of self-confidence. • If you don’t look at me, I don’t trust you! • If I’m interviewing you for a job and you can’t look at me, you don’t get hired!

  8. Cue #2 • Posture serves as an indicator of position. • It’s also important that I lean slightly in toward the person I am greeting. • That conveys that I am a warm and caring person.

  9. Cue #3 • Handshake • Be sure to grip firmly, putting your thumb firmly around the other person’s hand. • Don’t use any ‘jive’ handshakes when you’re really trying to impress someone!

  10. Cue #4 • Dress and Grooming • Dress is a disguise! • At home, I can dress like a bum, but there are places I can’t go and things I just can’t do if I’m not properly dressed. • Being properly dressed and groomed opens doors and creates opportunities. • On a side note: Concerning grooming: take a bath, wear deodorant, maybe perfume or cologne, keep your hair combed, brush your teeth, wear clean clothes.

  11. Cue #5 • Facial Expressions • In other words, smile! Really successful companies have learned to hire nice people.

  12. Cue #6 • Tone of voice and Word Selection • This is extremely important! • I want to convey with my voice that I am a warm and caring person, but also, that I know what I’m talking about. • You decide what you want to convey to others with your tone of voice.

  13. Cue #7 • Level of relaxation/stress • If you’re up-tight and stressed-out, that will come through to people. • You’ll want to act as though you’ve been walking up and introducing yourself to strangers all your life!

  14. Cue #8 • Energy level • You want to have sense of “being alive” about you. • You need to be able to show that you’re awake, alert, and ready to go.

  15. Activity • Write a letter to Mrs. Westra or Mr. Hatfield telling them what you are think about Teen Leadership thus far. • They will have a class list and will give to me in one week showing the student who delivered the letters. This will be a grade.

  16. Launch • To succeed….you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you. • Tony Dorsett • YouTube - An Inspirational Video 1 - The Law Of Attraction

  17. Internal vs. External Qualities • Create a poster to show how a person demonstrates self-confidence. • Draw a person in detail. • We will see the external qualities with the drawing. • You need to list the internal qualities inside your person. • Detail and in color as these will be hung up.

  18. ASSIGNMENT • Create a poster for each of the 8 Cues • See example: • Match book poster 1. Title 2. Names 3. On the match book – title, picture, explanation and why each cue is important

  19. Role Play • Choose a scenario to role play with a partner. Practice and we will perform 

  20. Journal • Free write • Check your affirmation bag and write affirmations. • Remember to affirm others for the good they have done-that is an affirmation.

  21. Journal • What would happen if everyone wore the same clothes? • What would happen if you threw a piece of trash on the ground? What if everyone did? • What if you could walk up walls and across ceilings? • What would happen if you loved your neighbour as yourself? What if everyone did? • What would happen if you grew taller than trees? How would this change your life?

  22. Activity: Name Game • Use the piece of construction paper to describe yourself. • Write your first name along the left hand side of the paper. • Using the letters in your name, describe yourself using sentences. • Draw a picture to go along with each description.
