  30. Elaine Sanders-Bush Symposium endowed Elaine has served as a leader, mentor and role model for her many trainees, her colleagues, and the larger neuroscience community. Elaine has contributed to the success of everyone around her; scores of graduate students and postdoctoral acknowledge Elaine as critical for their success. Her role as the Founding Director of the Vanderbilt Brain Institute made possible an academic home for the first non-departmental PhD training program, in neuroscience, at Vanderbilt, along both integrative and molecular tracks. We celebrated her 48-year career at Vanderbilt at an Inaugural Symposium last month. We are currently raising an Elaine Sanders-Bush Fund in her honor.

  32. Managing fast growth – puts stress on faculty, administration, space Pharmacology is running out of space Departmental Allocation has not changed to meet needs of a larger faculty, more personnel Funding in a flat NIH environment – faculty need to be ever more adventuresome about finding funding; bridge funding is SO appreciated! Economic crisis affects us all, individually, the department, the institution. Our Challenges

  33. Strategic Planning Departmental Strategic Planning Session in Dec 2008 • Training student morale: • Students took over organization of the Annual Retreat, Journal Club • Partnership with clinicians: clinical certificate program • Science loss of DMPK, signaling • drove recruitment of faculty in these areas • Administration too much bureaucracy • Fully implemented electronic financial records, ordering, compliance, effort reporting, animal care approval • HR two new tracks: Staff Scientist, Senior Staff Scientist

  34. Graduate ProgramStrategic Planning Retreat • Dec. 2009: First ever Strategic Planning Session for • Pharmacology Curriculum; both faculty and students participated • Imagine what kind of training a scientist would need to be • prepared for science in 2020 • One theme: translational approaches from molecule to in vivo • Curriculum redesign • Planning opportunities for moving up some of our • pharmacology coursework to the second semester of the • first year
