  1. Sustainable Packaging Grand River Printing Earth Day Seminar

  2. What is Sustainable Packaging? • Maximizes the use of renewable or recycled source materials; • Is sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using renewable energy; • Is manufactured using clean production technologies and best practices; • Meets market criteria for performance and cost; • Is physically designed to optimize materials and energy; • Is beneficial, safe & healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle; • Is made from materials healthy in all probable end of life scenarios; • Is effectively recovered and utilized in biological and/or industrial cradle to cradle cycles. 3. Definition of Sustainable Packaging The ability to meet our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Source: Packaging Strategies

  4. Is Sustainable Packaging Here To Stay? • Global warming is the new driver for corporate America’s interest in sustainable packaging. • Improved energy practices getting much of the attention in the C-level suites. • Of the Global Fortune 250, 64% now include statements of corporate responsibility. • Dow Jones Sustainability Index tracks the performanceof ~ 200 companies, stating “Sustainability factors are increasingly linked to financial drivers……” Source: Fortune Magazine, April 2, 2007

  5. Wal-Mart Goals • To be supplied 100% by renewable energy • Existing stores 25% more efficient in 7 years; new stores 30% more efficient in 4 years • Trucks 25% more efficient in 3 years; 50% in 10 years • To create zero waste • 25% reduction in solid waste in 3 years • All private brand packaging improved in 2 years • To sell products that sustain our resources and environment • 20% supply base aligned in 3 years

  9. How do Wal-Mart and Other Companies Engage in a Sustainable Package Design Process?

  10. Packaging Supply Chain Efforts • Sustainable packaging efforts are directed primarily, but not exclusively, at: • Improving how materials, products, and packaging are sourced, purchased, designed, and produced • Reducing energy requirements throughout the product/package life cycle • Using renewable and recycled materials • Improving manufacturing processes and efficiencies

  11. Packaging Supply Chain Efforts in Action • Reducing package size and improving distribution/logistics efficiencies • Supporting retailing efficiencies • Diverting packaging waste to composting or recycling programs, or • Designing products/packaging with cradle to cradle rather than cradle to grave scenarios • Minimizing waste at every opportunity in the manufacturing and distribution cycles.[1] Source:Packaging and Integrated Technology Solutions Study, February, 2007

  12. Challenges to Implementing Sustainability (percent of respondents) • Cost – 60% • Comparable quality – 36% • Lack of alternatives – 31% • Raw material prices – 30% • Compatibility with existing systems – 30% • Lack of standard metrics – 27% Source: Packaging Digest and Sustainable Packaging Coalition Study December, 2007

  13. Examples of Sustainable Designs • Wine bottles made from PET plastic instead of glass • Sainsbury (U.K.) • 1/8 the weight of glass > reduces CO2 emissions • Soy Guard Deck Sealant • Made from Bio-resin • Ultra low V.O.C. Clean Air Formula • Non-toxic and non-flammable • Harry Potter – “greenest book” ever published • 65% of paper used is FSC certified (environmentally and socially responsibly managed) • 22 million pounds used in printing this book www.sustainableisgood.com

  14. Examples of Sustainable Designs • 360 Vodka • Uses 100% recycled paper for its labels • Labels printed with water based inks • Bottles made from 85% recycled content • 75% of which is post consumer • Shipping container is made from 100% recycled content and is designed to be re-used as a storage unit. • Postage paid return envelope to send bottle closures back for infinite use. www.sustainableisgood.com

  15. Examples of Sustainable Designs • Aqua2GO – boxed water • 94% product and 6% packaging • vs. 80% product and 20% packaging for bottled water • 5 year shelf life • Construction is 74% paper; 20% plastic, and 6% aluminum • Home Depot’s Eco Option line of products • 2,500 products currently with a goal of 6,000 • Electric chainsaw – green because it was not gas powered • Bug Zapper – green because it was not a poisonous spray. www.sustainableisgood.com
