  • ZR compressors require seal vent air. When new, the requirement is 2-3% of the inlet air flow. However, as the machine “breaks-in” this requirement can reach as high as 8% by the end of its first year of service! These losses have a major impact on specific power.

  • The ZR is a two stage machine. The second stage typically wears out before the first, between 30,000 and 50,000 depending on the application. Customers are encouraged to change-out the first stage with the second. This exchange interval will cost 50-55% the cost of a new compressor.

  • Teflon coatings are used on the ZR rotors as no oil is available for lubrication. Teflon is a fluoropolymer and as it wears emits a fine dust into the air stream. Flouropolymers have the same detrimental effect on paint systems as silicones.

  • The timing gears and rotors wear-in during the first year of operation creating another efficiency drop of several percentage points.

  • The ZR is a two stage compressor with no inter-cooling. Second stage discharge temperatures can approach 600 F (315 C). These extreme temperatures impose added stresses on the machine.

  • The ZR gear case breathing element is not effective at removing oil droplets. The inside of the enclosure and the compressor, control panel etc. become coated with a film of oil. It also coats the air to air heat exchangers on air cooled units, reducing cooling efficiency. It is difficult to maintain the equipment when covered with oil.
