  1. The Conditional By Amy Roper

  2. The Conditional The conditional tense is used in a largely similar way to that in which it is used in English. It expresses a condition, i.e. ‘would’ in English.

  3. Formation of The Conditional The Conditional Tense is formed by taking the FUTURE STEM of the verb, and adding the IMPERFECT ENDINGS. • je ____ ais • Tu ____ ais • il ____ ait • Nous ____ ions • Vous iez • ils ____ aient

  4. Formation of The Conditional Tense For example Using the verb Jouer – to play, we take the infinitive and add the conditional endings je jouerais Tu jouerais Il jouerait Nous jouerions Vous joueriez Ils joueraient

  5. Future stem • For most verbs you use the infinitive form of the verb For example Jouer However there are some irregular verbs where the stem changes completely For example Venir becomes viendr…

  6. Further examples of irregular stems • Here are some other examples of the different future tense forms. • Aller – ir • Avoir – aur • Faire – fer • Vouloir – voudr • Pouvoir – pourr • Savoir – saur • Etre - ser

  7. The Conditional Tense Examples: I would go shopping if ... I would fly if I had wings… I would type faster if I had more hands…

  8. Si Clauses The IMPERFECT and CONDITIONAL are used together in "si clauses" in the same way as they are used in English. e.g. If I won the lottery, I would buy a larger house. Si je gagnais à la loterie, j'achèterais une plus grande maison. If my friend was not on holiday, we would go to the cinema together, Si mon ami n'était pas en vacances, nous irions ensemble au cinéma

  9. Exercices • You would find ……………………………. • We would change………………………… • They (males) would talk…………………… • I would give ……………………………. • He would eat ……………………………. • She would find……………………………. • They would work…………………………….
