  2. What does it mean to be Pashtun? • Pashtun is pronounced as PASH-toon • Also known as Pushtun; Pakhtun; Pashtoon; Pathan; Afghan • They are located at Southeastern Afghanistan; northwestern Pakistan • 8 to 9 million population • Local language is Pashtu

  3. What does it mean to be Pashtun? • Pashtun are people that lives Southeastern Afghanistan and the Northwestern province of Pakistan. They are one of the largest groups in Afghanistan. Most of Pashtuns are pastoral nomads, theywonderarounduntiltheyfind grass fields. Theyusuallytravel in clans.Pashtuns are consider as Sunni Muslims.

  4. A Pashtun society begins with a man in a family call mailk. It is likely that the man will have several wives, if he is rich. The sons will marry the first cousin, then he is given a piece of his father’s land. He will then start a small village called jirga. After a generation or so the village would be repopulated and soon too small for the population and they will move out of their Khol. This process will repeat, soon turning them into Khel, and they will go and search for new lands.

  6. History of Pashtuns • Pashtun’s tribal and sub-tribal groups are divided among territory lines, because they do not want territory be a source of conflict between the tribals. Amir Abdul Rahman Khanruled Afghanistan from 1880 to 1901. Pashtuns make their livings off of animals or farming.

  7. History of Pashtuns • Ahmad Shah Durrani founded Afghanistan in 1747. Pashtuns was the majority of the population in Afghanistan. • In 1979 Russia invaded Afghanistan, causing most of the Pashtuns(6.2 million) to move to Iran and other countries. The invasion lasted 10 years. In 1989 Russia withdraw their soldiers.

  8. Role of Pashtuns in Afghanistan The elders of Pashtuns like Samad Khan and BachaKhan were people who support collective approach to life. Elders thought about the betterment of Pashtun life and addresses the collective issues of Pashtun. They raise awareness to the society and politically resolve the problem

  9. Role of Pashtuns in Afghanistan • The women Pashtuns in Afghanistan keeps the society running. The main job for the woman are house keeping, farming, agriculture, raise live stocks, and when the country is despite they would go into war.

  10. Role of Pashtuns in Afghanistan • The role for the male Pashtuns are defending their country and sometimes they tend to help out with the farm.
