  1. nQPS commissioning …a long way to go

  2. Topics • nQPS component overview • Enhancements in Firmware • Commissioning diagram • Detailed task list • Summary

  3. nQPS system - components Cable connections Signals BS/DS Interlocks Heaters Power FIP In numbers: 450x DQLPU450x DQAMGs 1700x DQQDS 2100x DQQBS DQLPU DQQBS 3x DQQDS2x DQQBS 2x DQQDS2x D Q A M G S Crate Crate controller Bad splice detection board Symmetric quench detection board

  4. nQPS enhancements • New Firmware for DQAMGS and DQQDS boards • DQAMGS: Better diagnostics/stability (automated sector set-up possible) • DQQDS: new logic prevents chain reactions and protects against single negative pulses • DQQDS: Enhanced buffer functionality • DQQDS: Adaptive filter onset programmable • DQQBS: New threshold (500uV)

  5. ELQA finished, signal cables connected Po phase 0 Bring up “old” QPS system (FIP/Power/Interlocks) nQPS basic tests (test cabling by heater firing set BS coefficients & threshold) nQPS advanced tests up to 2kA(pyramids, fast power abort @2kA, BS coefficients fine tuning) Po phase 2 Connect nQPS to interlocks Test of interlocks Po phase 2 (phase 0 possible) Connect nQPS to heaters Heater firing from nQPS, Final nQPS tests: Pyramids up to 5kA, energy extractions up to 6kA) Po phase 2

  6. nQPS HWC Powering Phase 0 • DQLPU, TUNNEL: Re-connection of the signal/power cable • DQQDS, TUNNEL: Firmware upgrade for DQQDS boards. All 4 cards will be exchanged by updated ones. Update of equipment database • DQAMGS, TUNNEL: Firmware upgrade for DQAMGS crate controllers (exchange of boards) • TUNNEL: Re-powering of the 110 Power-Packs of the sector • TUNNEL: Re-establish FIP communication with all nQPS controllers of the three main circuits in the arc to be commissioned. • DQHDS, CCC: Test of the ‘old QPS’ interlocks. Close interlock loop.Time: 2h/sector • DQHDS, TUNNEL: Re-powering of the DQHDS in the arcs and in the LSS’. Verification of correct charging. • DQQBS/DQQDS, CCC: Check of all picked-up voltage signals (noise floor) on BS and DS boards. Ramp to 110A to see if all cards are alive.Time: 2-8h/sector • DQQBS, CCC: Using the new write/read tool: Load a default set of Inductive Compensation Coefficients. Read back the values and compare. Time: 3h/sector

  7. nQPS HWC Powering Phase 2 (1/3) • DQQBS, CCC: Ramp to inj. current and dump. Calculate and correct the compensation values. Ramp again for verification. To be repeated until satisfaction. Time: 8h min./sector • DQQBS/DQQDS, CCC: Fire heaters in groups from “old” QPS. Signatures recorded by BS and DS boards to be used to verify cabling/configuration/HDS controller position. Verification of proper heater discharge curves. (PM)Eventually pre-cycling to 110A or 350A required. (PO Phase 0 possible) Time: 2h/sector + 2-4 hours off-line • DQQBS/DQQDS, CCC: nQPS interlock checking. Verification of correct operation of the interlock chain. Ending with ramp to 2 kA to confirm operation without trigger activation (with interlock still disabled)Time: 2 – 4h/sector • DQQDS, CCC: Type test in the first commissioned sector: Opening of the EE facilities at ~ 1000A during an upwards ramp.Time: 2h • DQQBS/DQQDS, TUNNEL: Interconnection of the nQPS to the Interlock Chain. Time: 4 h/sector

  8. nQPS HWC Powering Phase 2 (2/3) • DQQBS/DQQDS, CCC: Test of nQPS interlocksTime: 2h/sector (PO Phase 0 possible) • DQQBS/DQQDS, CCC: Repetition of ramping test to 2 kA. Energy Extraction from 2 kA. Time: 4h/sector • DQQBS, CCC: Perform a Measurement Pyramid (Splice Monitor) to 2 kA, mainly to verify the repaired cabling (PI2.s1). Time: 3 – 4h/sector • DQQDS, TUNNEL: Interlinking the heater firing circuits of the nQPS (connecting the nQPS with the heaters)Time: 2h/sector. • DQQDS, CCC:Heater firing test from nQPS – in groups. Off-line analysis Time: 2h/sector + 2-4h analysis (PO Phase 0 possible)

  9. nQPS HWC Powering Phase 2 (3/3) • DQQDS, CCC:Ramp to 4 kA. Energy Extraction at 4 kA. Analyze the results. Time: 2h/sector, analyzing 4h/sector • DQQBS, CCC: Perform a Pyramid to 5 kA. Analyze the results. Time: 4h/sector • DQQBS, CCC: Ramp in two steps to 6 kA. Analyze the results. Calorimetric measurement by CRG Time: 8h/sector, incl. preparation time • DQQDS, CCC:Ramp to 6 kA. Energy Extraction at 6 kA. Analyze the results. Time: 4 hours • DONE, nQPS fully commissioned for 3.5TeV operation…

  10. Summary • Re-commissioning of the nQPS system after connector repair(almost all tests of nov/dec have to be repeated (S12) or done the first time) • Firmware updates for enhanced functionality/stability • New threshold value for the DQQBS (500uV allows smoother operation due to more margin) • Commissioning time in CCC estimated to ~65h per sector (tunnel interventions not included)
