  1. Multi-ELTs Mark Casali Markus Kissler-Patig

  2. What do we want 10-15 years from now? • no single big (“particle physics”) science project emerges as the driver • Science WG developed various different science cases, from 20’ FoV to high strehl at 1” FoV • Instrument WG identified need for multiple (6+) instruments available on-line → maintain diverse general-purpose capabilities

  3. What can we learn from experience? • European astronomical community is large and scientifically varied • 4-telescope VLT has been very successful (even without considering VLTI) • large instrument suite on-line and stable • large number of different observing programmes possible →there is concern that a single ELT will result in restricted access for the large ESO community?

  4. What about performance? • System performance, not just diameter, which is important • not clear that a single telescope will outperform multiple optimised slightly smaller telescopes • S~ D4 (diff limit). But if AO image quality “floor” S~ D2 • AO is easier on smaller telescopes (less actuators, smaller DMs) • widefield capability (A.Ω) is easier to achieve on smaller telescope • larger instrument suite possible on multi-ELT facility • coating, number of mirrors optimised for wavelength → relative performance of single vs multiple ELTs needs to be studied

  5. What kind of multi-ELT is possible? • Cost law is very important • historically $~D2.7, assume D2 → $ ~ D12 + D22 +... ~ total telescope area

  6. What kind of multi-ELT facility is possible? 24 30 37 42 24 30 18 24 17 24 17
