  1. BASEBALL

  2. HOW IS IT PLAYED? • The field of play has 9 positions. • When at bat, the players of a team use a batting order to decide who bats when. 1 – PITCHER 2 – CATCHER 3 – FIRST BASE 4 – SECOND BASE 5 – THIRD BASE 6 – SHORTSTOP 7 – LEFT FIELD 8 – CENTER FIELD 9 – RIGHT FIELD THE NINE DEFENSIVE POSITIONS

  3. THE RULES OF BASEBALL • Each game is played for 9 innings. An inning ends when both teams bat and make 3 outs. • The game is mainly a contest between the pitcher and the batter. Nothing else happens until the ball enters the field of play. • The team that scores the most runs after 9 innings is the winner. If there is a tie, the game goes into extra innings.

  4. PITCHER vs. BATTER • This is the most important part of the game. Everything else that happens is based on this moment… • The outcome of an at-bat depends on the count: • 3 Strikes: OUT: the batter is out • 4 Balls: WALK: the batter goes to first base

  5. GAME SITUATIONS Outs A batter is out when any of the following occur: • They get 3 strikes • They hit a ball that is caught before the ball hits the ground ( called FLY) • Any member of the fielding team touch the batter with the ball. Any base-runner is out if any of the following occur: • The base runner is forced out before arriving at the next base. • The base runner is touched out while out base.

  6. GAME SITUATIONS Balls and Walks If the batter is awarded 4 balls before striking out or getting out in any other way, they will be given a "walk". In a walk, the batter is allowed to safely go to first base.

  7. GAME SITUATIONS The Strike Zone The top of the strike zone is the midpoint of the area between the batter's shoulder and the top of the Knee • A ball thrown into the strike zone that is not hit it. Its called Strike

  8. GAME SITUATIONS Running the Bases After a batter hits a fair ball, they will attempt to do one of the following: • Run to 1st base only. • Run to 1st base, then 2nd base (called a double). • Continue past 2nd base and run to 3rd base (called a triple). • Continue past 3rd base to home plate (called a home run).
