  1. Panel Session 1: What are Best Practices in Teaching Systems Engineering to Undergraduates? Dr. Armen Zaharian University of Michigan Dearborn

  2. 1st Workshop on US Undergraduate Education in Systems Engineering • BS in Industrial Systems Engineering vs. BS in Systems Engineering • What is missing? Can this be addressed in current ISE curriculum? • Differences between instructional approaches for teaching systems engineering vs. traditional disciplines • Depth in atechnical area, domain experience, and depth in systems engineering • Narrowing the “usage” of word systems engineering

  3. The Institute for Advanced Vehicle Systems (IAVS)College of Engineering and Computer ScienceUniversity of Michigan Dearborn • The IAVS’s focus is on "systems," especially those related to the design, development and manufacturing of complex vehicles. • IAVS provides project based leaning experiences and cross disciplinary automotive design classes to undergraduate and graduate students in “systems” engineering. • Low Mass Vehicle System Design • The Model T Challenge project- sponsored by Ford Global Technologies LLC as a student competition to help celebrate the centennial of the Model T • Reconfigurable Electric Vehicle Design • Cross-disciplinary automotive design classes, known as the Automotive Design Studio. The purpose is for engineering and industrial design students to learn and work together in a project-focused team environment and gain hands-on experience in the advance design of major vehicle systems.

  4. The Institute for Advanced Vehicle Systems (IAVS)College of Engineering and Computer ScienceUniversity of Michigan Dearborn • Key Project Characteristics • Students conduct industry sponsored automotive research projects with the “systems” focus. • Project teams consists of undergraduate and graduate students, and project advisors that have significant practical automotive system development experiences. • System requirements are identified by automotive OEMs. • Project team has access to industry experts for advice and recommendations.

  5. Key Features of Undergraduate Systems Engineering Programs • Strong multidisciplinary component • Strong experiential learning component • The best ways to understand Engineering Systems is through examples. • Industry sponsored “real” systems engineering projects. Companies provide the problems, expertise and preferably financial support.
