  1. Are You Smarter Than a BMS 6th Grader?

  2. Rules of the Game • 1. Print out a copy of the score sheet • 2. To begin, click on a category and grade level. Read the question. • 3. Think about the answer and record it on your sheet. • 4. After your answer has been recorded, click on the screen 5. If you got the answer correct, star that box on your answer sheet. • 6. Hit the “Return” button to go back to the main screen. Next, click on the lowest money box on the game screen to keep track of how much you’ve won if you got the previous answer correct. • 7. Bonus points for the test will be rewarded to any student completing the activity and getting a parent/guardian signature. • 7. Good luck and I hope your smarter than a BMS 5th grader!

  4. 5th Grade Variables Question • What is a variable? Next, identify the independent, dependent, and controls in the experiment below: • The Mighty Moose Science Group wants to know if the size of the paper airplane’s wings will change the distance the plane will fly.

  5. 5th Grade Variables Answer • Variable – A factor you can change in an experiment that might affect the results • Independent – Wing Size • Dependent – Distance of Flight • Controls – Type of paper used, environment, Same type of plane design Return

  6. 5th Grade Experimenting Question • What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative observations?

  7. 5th Grade Experimenting Answer • Qualitative observations involve the use of the 5 senses: The cat was brown with white stripes. • Quantitative Observations involve the use of numbers or measurements when describing an object: There were five ducks crossing the street. Return

  8. 4th Grade Scientific Method Question • List three things that should always be included in a conclusion?

  9. 4th Grade Scientific Method Answer • Restate the hypothesis, was the hypothesis correct? Describe the results and data, describe some sources of errors, tell about improvements, describe future experiments or further investigations Return

  10. 4th Grade Experimenting Question • The plant was sitting in the window where it was getting full sun. The leaves on the side of the plant toward the window had turned brown and dry. The other side of the plant was growing and blooming. What can you infer happened to the plant to cause it to become brown and dry? Explain.

  11. 4th Grade Experimenting Answer • The plant received too much sun on one side. It should be rotated or moved to a less sunny area. Return

  12. 3rd Grade Process Skills Question • What term refers to an interpretation based on observations and prior knowledge? • Example: Mr. I comes into class huffing and puffing. I might guess he has just come from gym class.

  13. 3rd Grade Process Skills Answer • Inferring or Inference Return

  14. 3rd Grade Variables • The factors in an experiment that are not being tested and must therefore be kept constant.

  15. 3rd Grade Variables • Controlled Variables Return

  16. 2nd Grade Observation Question • Charlie Brown and Snoopy observed that each morning there were new deer tracks around the edge of the creek that ran behind their house. The hind legs of the deer did not appear to go into the water. From their observation, they inferred what about the deer?

  17. 2nd Grade Observation Answer • The deer was getting a drink of water. Return

  18. 2nd Grade Experimenting Question • Katherine asks, “Which color of candy do kids prefer?” What would be an important constant or controlled variable in this experiment? • A. Only ask her friends • B. Use the same candy that comes in different colors, but the same flavors • C. Ask each person what their favorite type of candy is.

  19. 2nd Grade Experimenting Answer • B Return

  20. 1st Grade Observation/Inference Question • Which statement below contains an observation and an inference? • A. The sun is shining and 3 birds are in the tree. • B. The boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius. • C. The dog ate all of his food, so he must have been hungry.

  21. 1st Grade Observation / Inference Question • C Return

  22. 1st Grade Safety Question • Mr. I is preparing his class for an experiment. Which safety rule is he concerned about when he asks the following question: Are your hands, floors, and tables dry? • A. Hands safety • B. Fire safety • C. Electrical Safety • D. Chemical Safety

  23. 1st Grade Safety Answer • C Return

  24. Million Dollar QuestionTopic Science Process Skills

  25. 1,000,000 Question • What is the mnemonic device for the seven science process skills we use when we take on the role of scientists. What skill does each letter represent? • You definitely deserve 1,000,000 dollars if you get this right!

  26. 1,000,000 Answer • COMIC – E • Classifying, Observing, Measuring, Inferring and Predicting, Communicating, and Experimenting
