  2. Session Outline • In today's session you will learn: • What are drugs? • The effects of drugs • How you can help your child

  3. Definitions • Drugs: refers to all substances including alcohol and tobacco as well as illegal drugs • Youth: a general term that refers to young people of all pre-adult years • Teenager: refers to the age range of 12 – 19 years. • Parents: traditional parents, single parents, guardians and other primary caregivers to the child. • Family: the immediate and extended family of a child.

  4. Drug Prevention Drug prevention means: efforts to help avoid the illegal, inappropriate, unhealthy, harmful use of drugs.

  5. Young people use more drugs

  7. Drugs can harm teenagers in many ways: • Can cause poor judgement • Bad behaviour • Damage their growing body and brain • addiction

  8. How are drugs dangerous? • Damage to brain and learning • Social problems- behaviour with family • Increased risk of mental illness
