  1. UNIDO update Strengthening the local production of essential medicines in developing and least developed countries

Recent developments • GMP Roadmap launched in Kenya (Nov 2014) • Currently conducting assessments of all Kenyan pharmaceutical manufacturers in conjunction with PPB • 2 day assessments (not inspections) • Provides baseline for monitoring by PPB and basis for CAPA development by companies • White Paper on the GMP roadmap concept has been prepared and is being printed. Further work required to integrate with WHO EML risk assessment work for complete approach.

  3. ……continued • FEAPM internship training programme being piloted in EAC • 17 students from Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda took part in 2 week training programme in preparation for 3 month industry internships • A masters in Industrial pharmacy sponsored by UNIDO has begun at the St. Lukes Foundation in Tanzania whilst sponsorship of the Industrial Pharmacy Advanced Training (IPAT) course continues • Support for the Southern Africa Generic Medicines Association (SAGMA) and the Federation of African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Associations (FAPMA) continues. • Thank you to the Global Fund and UNICEF both of whom will provide speakers for the upcoming FAPMA AGM

  4. …..continued • Market data initiatives have commenced in Zimbabwe, Ghana and across the EAC • Through combining available data from for example customs and regulators looking to provide market data (value and volume) broken down using ATC classification system. • Ongoing work in Ghana as part of early implementation of the PMPA BP • Includes refining a GMP Roadmap, assessment of applications for EDAIF soft loans, developing business linkages platform and training for “Partnership readiness” and as mentioned market data initiative. • On going work in Zimbabwe for strategy implementation • High level delegation received from ECOWAS/WAHO in March • VMPA study with WHO and AVMI on vaccine manufacturing in Africa
