  1. 1-1 Properties of Real Numbers Objectives: To graph and order real numbers. To identify and use properties of real numbers.

  2. Classifying Real Numbers • Natural Numbers: Numbers used for counting. • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ... • Whole Numbers: Natural numbers & 0. • 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, … • Integers: Positive numbers, negative numbers, & 0 • -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, … • Rational Numbers: Can be written as quotients of integers with non-zero denominators. They also can be written as terminating decimals or repeating decimals. • Irrational Numbers: Numbers that cannot be written as a quotients of integers. Their decimals neither terminate nor repeat

  3. Real Numbers: Rational Numbers: Integers: Whole Numbers: Irrational Numbers: Natural Numbers: Example 1: Determine whether the statement is true or false. A natural number is a rational number. Integers are whole numbers. Irrational numbers are real numbers.

  4. Example 2: Which set of numbers best describes the values for each variable? a) The cost in dollars of admission for people. • The maximum speed s in meters per second on a roller coaster of height h in meters. (Use the formula given in the picture) C is a rational # (such as $7.25), and the number of people is a whole # The height is measures in rational #’s. Since the speed is calculated with a square root, is an irrational # unless is the square of a rational #

  5. Inverses • The opposite or additive inverse of any number is . • The reciprocalor multiplicative inverse of any number is . • Example 3: Find the opposite and the reciprocal of each number. a) b) c)

  6. Properties of Real Numbers

  7. Trivia… What are the only mammals that can’t jump? Elephants 2. Most lipsticks contain what weird ingredient? Fish Scales

  8. Absolute Value • The absolute value of a real number is its distance from zero on the number line. Represented by • Example 3: Find a) b) c)

  9. Practice Problems WS
