DEFINITION OF ADJECTIVES • ADJECTIVE is a part of speech that describe or modify nouns or pronouns • It gives the meaning to the noun • Adjectives help to illustrate what we are talking about Eg: That bag is colorfulHe’s a handsome man. • It makes your sentence more interesting and clear Try to compare these sentence: a) I saw a bird going into a house b)I saw a blue bird going into a beautiful big red house Handsome man Colorful bag

  3. TYPES OF ADJECTIVES?

  4. OPINION • Describe what you think about something or someone • Include words such as beautiful, ugly, serious, scary and etc E.g.: She looks beautiful in her school uniform Despite their cute appearance, monkeys may hurt people sometimes I think I’m CUTE…

  5. SIZE • Describe sizes • Includes Big, small, Fat, thin, thick and etc E.g.: He finished reading that thick academic journal within 3 hours He used to be very fat before undergoing that diet and becoming this thin. SHAPE • Describe shapes and patterns • Includes word such as circle, star shaped, checkered, spherical and etc E.g.: He baked me a heart shaped cake on our anniversary It’s my first time seeing a spherical building.

AGE • Describe how old or young someone/something is • Includes words such as old, young, ancient, teenage E.g.: She is still a teenager Erika is disappointed when she was forced to move into a very old house which used to belong to her grandmother. QUALITY • Answer the question ‘what kind of’ people or things you are talking about. • Includes words such as naughty, kind, caring, boring and etc E.g.: I hate that movie because it is extremely boring Despite his cold attitude, he is very protective

  7. Color • Describe colors • Include words like blue, red, colorful, colorless and etc E.g: Most of my belongings are pink including my outfits and accessories. I don’t like those colorful shoes Origin • Describe where someone/something came from • Include words such as Japanese, eastern, London, Asian E.g.: I’ll be marrying a Japanese man next year Asian people are very friendly.

MATERIAL • Used to describe what the something is made of • Include words such as wood, plastic, cotton, nylon E.g.: My plastic spoon was taken by that bully For tonight’s party, I’m wearing a silk dress We’ve seen different types of adjectives and their examples. Could you give more examples under each categories?

  9. FORMING ADJECTIVES • Adjectives can be formed from nouns by adding certain suffixes
