Dystopic • Perhaps you feel that it is unrealistic to believe that governments and companies could possibly become so in control of people . . . • Perhaps you feel like everything that appears on the TV, radio, and internet must be true . . . • Perhaps you feel like the information you are presented with every day is on the “up and up” . . . • If that is case, you may feel that dystopic literature is a stretch and unbelievable. • However, although the premises of individual books *can* be out there, there are components of the books that hint at things occurring today . . . .

  3. Manipulation in Advertising • As a person who will one day make money and buy things, you are a future consumer. It’s important that you know how much the media around you manipulates you. • Food Advertising • Food Ads vs. Reality • Toy Ads

Product Placement • Product Placement in Film • Rachel Ray Product Placement • 30 Rock Snapple Spoof • Digital Product Placement • A guy whose job is to track this stuff • The current trend in advertising is product placement. • This is on the rise due to Tivo, Netflix and video streaming, and other technological advances.

  5. Future Consumers • As future consumers, you also need to know about the information that is being gathered about you. • Everything you do, from shopping at Giant to searching the web, is being recorded. • Loyalty cards – Article • Target’s “Pregnancy Prediction Score” - Article

What does this mean for us? • As we finish reading and studying dystopic literature, we are going to look at what is occurring in our real world. • We will be looking at how media influences us. • We are also going to examine how other countries have different types of control. • By the time we’re through, you should have a better understanding of media and its use, as well as how other people live around the world.
