  1. Gorgon Daniel Cericola Pd.5

  2. Backround • Gorgon= “ horrible female creature” usually any of the three sisters who had hair of living, venomous snakes, and a horrifying apperance that turned those who saw it to stone. Traditionally, while two of the Gorgons were immortal, Stheno and Euryale, their sister Medusa was not, and was slain by the mythical demigod and hero Perseus.

  3. Mythological backround • King Polydectes sent Perseus to kill Medusa in hopes of getting him out of the way, while he pursued Perseus's mother, Danae. • Perseus was armed with a scythe from Hermes (Roman equivalent Mercury) and a mirror (or a shield) from Athena • Cut off her head looking at her reflecting and gave the head to athena who made it into a shield for Zues (aegis)

  4. Continued…. . • Zues or Athena used the head to turn Atlas (a titan) into stone, transforming him into the Atlas Mountains that held up both heaven and earth • Ultimately, he used it against King Polydectes. When Perseus returned to the court of the king, Polydectes asked if he had the head of Medusa. Perseus replied "here it is" and held it aloft, turning the whole court to stone.

  5. Symbolism • Apotropaic magic is a type of magic intended to "turn away" harm or evil influences • Gorgon face, often with snakes protruding wildly and the tongue sticking out between her fangs frequently was used as an apotropaic symbol and placed on doors, walls, floors, coins, shields, breastplates, and tombstones in the hopes of warding off evil

  6. Quote MACDUFF Approach the chamber, and destroy your sight With a new Gorgon: do not bid me speak; See, and then speak yourselves. (Exeunt Macbeth and Lennox.) Awake, awake! Ring the alarum-bell! Murder and treason! Banquo and Donalbain! Malcolm! awake! Shake off this downy sleep, death's counterfeit, And look on death itself! Up, up, and see The great doom's image! Malcolm! Banquo! As from your graves rise up, and walk like sprites, To countenance this horror! Ring the bell.

  7. Modern Version • Approach the chamber, and destroy your sightWith a new monster to turn you to stone. Don’t ask me to speak.See, and then speak for yourselves.Awake, awake! Ring the alarms bell. Murder and treason!Banquo and Donalbain! Malcolm! Awake!Shake off this soft sleep, death's disguise,And look on death itself! Go up, go up, and seeThe great destruction's image! Malcolm! Banquo!Rise up as you would from your graves, and walk like spiritsTo see this horror!

  8. My interpretation • He is saying that the sight will shock them they wont be able to move “they will be turned to stone”
