  2. Discussion What is a thesis statement? What is the purpose of a thesis statement?

THESIS STATEMENTS • To create a thesis you first think of a topic. • Now take that topic and give it two opinions…FOR or AGAINST • Which side do you land on? • No middle ground for thesis statements. • Don’t be indecisive. • Create one sentence that tells whether you agree or disagree and your reasons why. • Let’s do some together.

Amazing Thesis Statements • Really powerful thesis statements: • Won’t begin with “I believe…” or “I think…” • DO begin with topic and continue on with your argument • Introduces your three points • Examples: • Ms. Robinson should marry Tim Tebow because he is attractive, he could provide for her well, and he is a godly man. • Violence in the media has a negative affect on children because it teaches them how to be violent with others, it exposes them to blood and gore, and it may give them nightmares which could affect many areas of their lives.

Thesis Practice: Take these informative statements and make them POWERFUL PERSUASIVE Thesis Statements • Informative: In the Louisville area, gasoline prices averaged a $4.53a gallon during the Memorial Day weekend. • Informative: President Obama was at the WKU basketball game last night. • Informative: There has only been one snow day for Warren County Schools this year.

  6. Chart of Topics • As a class we will create a chart of topics and various ideas for persuasion within those topics

  7. Thesis Statements • Pick 3 topics: • Write a thesis statement and 3 reasons why you believe that thesis for 3 different topics.

  8. Your Turn! • Choose your best out of the 3 thesis statements you created. • Take your chosen thesis statement and turn it into an AWESOME thesis statement by following the guidelines we discussed. • Make sure to include your three points • I will check for completion! 
