Recruitment of proven staff Trainees generally bring with them understanding of recent developments and changes in education Trainees decrease the adult: student ratio in a class and can provide vital support to students with additional needs and in enrichment activities Supporting Initial Teacher Education – benefits for schools

Why having a trainee doesn’t mean students have to lose out … • Trainees often bring in a different approach and the time and energy to trial new ideas – their subject knowledge may be more up to date • Trainees may have extra time for students • Trainees can increase student access to adult expertise by having 2+ adults in the class

  11. Are mentors born or can they be developed? How does your school develop mentoring and coaching? Do you need to do more?

  12. As a PCM how could you develop parity of mentoring experience for all trainees? • How will you support new mentors? • How will you use meetings? How many? • How will you ensure best practice is shared? • How will you challenge colleagues? • How will you ensure there is a shared vision?

As PCM you will need to understand How to analyse a situation so that the standards are made explicit How to use these to structure progress or set targets How to ensure there is a shared understanding How to use them when raising a cause for concern The PCM … gatekeeper to the professional standards

  15. For example … • A trainee in your school is struggling to teach in a way that complies with the school’s policy and repeated mentor discussions and targets. Learning objectives are irregularly displayed – but mostly lessons take the form of tasks which are delivered with little reference to the learning of students. There are no discipline problems because the teachers stay with the class. Which Teachers’ standards would apply to this situation.

  16. or • A member of your staff has an unexpected 2 week absence for personal reasons. In his / her absence, the trainee offers to take AS lessons. She works alongside an NQT planning these lessons. Lesson plans and lesson observation as well as scrutiny of student work shows that these lessons meet exam specifications. Students are well prepared for this section of the paper and the resources are stored on a shared MLE to be used by others. Which standards would you apply to this?

  19. Professional Studies Programme • Agreed by HEIs across London • Examples of good practice available on SWELTEC website • Can be delivered by another school e.g. a Training school • Enable trainees to write assignments

  20. Accessing ‘the knowledge’ of your school …. • More than nuts and bolts … what would a trainee need to know in order to teach in your school? • How will you make the culture and expectations of your school utterly transparent?

  21. What are the features of adult learners .. How will these programmes be delivered? • Expert witnesses? • Action research? • Student panels? • Seminars? • Staff handbook? • Lectures? • Observation programmes?

  23. THREAT e.g. behaviour management SOLUTION Can you identify ‘threats’ posed to the school through involvement in ITE and how you would minimise them?

  24. Strengths e.g. commitment to understanding additional needs Teaching is currently the most popular career choice for new graduates How to benefit your students And .. Can you identify the potential contribution of trainees .. And how you will use these?

As PCM you need to liaise with the HEIs … • When your mentors have raised a cause for concern and there is a danger of ‘failing’ • Subject mentors come in … to make sure there is consistency of judgement with the subject mentors • To ensure that all mentors are trained to stage 1 / 2 of the SWELTEC Certification framework • To inform the HEIs about your ITT placements
