  1. Environmental Considerations in LBRC TOT on Environmentally Sound Design and Implementation of PWs Community Roads of the PSNP June 13 – 23, 2011 Dessie, Ethiopia By DessalegnBezabih

  2. Environmental Considerations in LBRC • The first step of Environmental Friendly LBRC is to exercise Watershed based planning as per the Community-Based Participatory Watershed Dev’t Planning (CBPWDP), • The next step is to implement the screening of PWs for their environmental compliance using the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) of the PSNP, • The last step is to conduct environmental monitoring to track the impact of projects on the environment, • Insure sustainability of PWs (social, managerial, technical, environmental and financial or Op/MT).

  3. Environmental considerations (Cont’d) • Environmental measures along LBRC projects: • Physical measures: • Proper surface drainage systems (ditches, interceptors, mitre drains with appropriate intervals), • Environmentally safe drainage structures (safe flood water disposal, riprap, apron), • Scour checks at ditches and chute at steep slopes, 2. Biological measure: • Grass soading of embankment fills, • Grassed side ditches, mitre drains, structure outlet channels, • Slope stabilization grass or bush planting (vetiver, sisal, cactus, etc) 3. Application of Bio-engineering for road maintenance.

  4. Environmental considerations (Cont’d) Other points: • Low cut and fill. • Less destruction of forest by re-aligning routes, • Less damage to farm land to avoid social issues, • Involve sectors like Agriculture staff during road construction to let them contribute their responsibility before damage occurs for example in protecting the areas outside Road Way Limit.
