  1. Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s September 5 - 11, 2010 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.

  2. What is a Weekly World Watch? The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible. . I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW: • Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. • Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. • Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” • The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” • Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. • Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.

  3. BIBLE QUOTE What is in a Weekly World Watch? Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. News Photo This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. HEADLINE The source of the headline and the date are included. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. EVENT This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (andy@weeklyworldwatch.co.uk). COMMENT This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version.(Book, chapter, and verse)

  4. This Week’s Developments September 5 - 11, 2010 • Israelis feel prosperous, secure and disengaged • Israel's foreign minister threatens to derail peace talks • Pessimistic about peace, Israelis greet New Year • Iran accused of building secret nuclear plant • Putin overshadows Medvedev's democracy meeting • Pope faces protests and apathy on visit to Britain To print any of the event slides that follow, click the picture on the upper right

  5. in the latter years thou [Russia] shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them. “safely” means confidence and a false sense of security. Click here to read an article on this Israelis feel prosperous, secure and disengaged from the peace process. Time Magazine, September 10, 2010 In a 2007 survey, 95% of Israeli Jews described themselves as happy, and a third said they were “very happy”. The rich are happier than the poor, and the religious are happiest of all. But the broad thrust, so incongruous to people who know Israel from only headlines, suits a country whose quality of life is high and getting better. But wait. Deep down (you can almost hear the outside world ask), don’t Israelis know that finding peace with the Palestinians is the only way to guarantee their happiness and prosperity? Well, not exactly. Asked in a March poll to name the “most urgent problem” facing Israel, just 8% of Israeli Jews cited the conflict with Palestinians, putting it 5th behind education, crime, national security and poverty. Israeli Arabs placed peace first, but among Jews here, the issue the President Obama calls “critical for the world” just doesn’t seem – critical. “There is no sense of urgency” about the peace process, says Tamar Hermann, a political scientist who has measured Israeli public appetite for a settlement since 1994 EVENT This article in Time Magazine this week is an amazing insight into the current mindset of Israeli Jews. One paragraph says “As a fresh round of peace talks begin, the truth is, Israelis are no longer preoccupied by the matter. They’re otherwise engaged; they’re making money; they’re enjoying the rays of late summer.” They feel secure and prosperous. There maybe distant threats from Iran but they are safe. So they are making money and enjoying life. They no longer dwell as they once did in walled villages (Kibbutz's) with armed guards and barbed wire surrounding a few families. They are confident and unafraid. But this is a false sense of security. And remarkably this is precisely what is described in Ezekiel 38 at the time Russia invades. COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 38:8)

  6. Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace; and there was no peace; To wit, the prophets of Israel which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace, saith the Lord GOD. Israel's foreign minister threatens to derail peace talks Daily Telegraph, September 6, 2010 Israel's hard-line foreign minister has said that his party will try to block any extension of Israel's settlement slowdown, a move that could derail the recently launched Mideast peace negotiations. Avigdor Lieberman said the Israeli government must keep its explicit promise to voters that the 10-month slowdown, declared under US pressure in order to draw the Palestinians to the negotiating table, will end as scheduled at the end of September. The Sept. 26 deadline is a challenge for the fragile talks launched in Washington last week. The Palestinians say they will quit the talks if the slowdown ends, but extending it could potentially bring down the Israeli government. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, has yet to say how he will handle the deadline. "A promise is a promise," Mr Lieberman told Israel Radio. "We will not agree to any extension." EVENT Avigdor Lieberman made a speech this week in Jerusalem. He said “we don’t agree to any extension of the [settlement] freeze. Not for 3 months, one year, half a year or one minute.” He said that “signing a peace agreement… is an unobtainable goal.. not in the coming year and not in the next generation.” If there was a peace agreement “nothing would change – on the day after we would have more claims for the Galilee, the Negev and claims for autonomy.” Of course he is right. If Israel did concede the West Bank and even half of Jerusalem it would not end there. Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, Syria would not rest until Israel came to an end – the war would continue. These peace talks (or as Paul writes to the Thessalonians) those who “say peace” or “talk peace” will only bring destruction. God has decreed there will be NO PEACE…. COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 13:10+16)

  7. And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. The only feast that is mentioned as occurring in the kingdom is the feast of the tabernacles Pessimistic about peace, Israelis greet New Year A trumpet made from a ram's horn was blown at Rosh Hashanah. It was intended to symbolically awaken the listeners from their "slumbers" and alert them to the coming judgment Associated Press, September 9, 2010 Israelis usher in the Jewish new year, or Rosh Hashanah, at sundown Wednesday with a widespread sense of pessimism that a new round of U.S.-sponsored Mideast talks can achieve peace. President Barack Obama wants a deal within a year, but Israelis are deeply sceptical after decades of failed efforts. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the widespread doubts. "There are many obstacles, many sceptics, and many reasons for scepticism," he said in a holiday address. He called the talks "an important step in an attempt to reach" peace, but said it "is an attempt because there is no certainty of success." Still some took heart from the simple fact that the Israelis and Palestinians are talking again after negotiations broke down over the Gaza war nearly two years ago. "The Middle East swamp becomes even more toxic, even more dangerous, when the water stands still," commentator Nahum Barnea wrote in the daily Yediot Ahronot. "But even those who fear, as I do, that no agreement will come of these ceremonies, has to be glad that something is moving." EVENT COMMENT We are at a very interesting time of the Hebrew year. On Wednesday night it was the start of the Jewish year – Rosh Hashanah. Next Friday night (17th September) is Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement. In 1973 the Arab nations launched a surprise attack on this exact day. It is the most sacred and solemn day in the Jewish calendar. It was the day the Israelites were reconciled to God. A few days after Yom Kippur is the Feast of Tabernacles or as the Jews say “Sukkoth” which lasts 7 days. It is when the Jews celebrated the harvest and lived in booths. Solomon dedicated the temple at this time. There are many who believe Christ will return at around this time of the year. BIBLE QUOTE (Zechariah 14:16)

  8. And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. Iran accused of building secret underground nuclear plant Daily Telegraph, September 9, 2010 Iran has been secretly constructing a vast underground complex to hide a nuclear facility in the mountains east of Tehran in a development that would violate the UN sanctions regime, it has been claimed. The site, code-named 311, is set inside a military base near Abyek, 75 miles outside the capital, and consists of a series of four bombproof tunnels made from reinforced concrete set 656ft (200m) deep inside a desert ridge. The People's Mujahedeen of Iran, an opposition group with an extensive network inside the country, said Tehran launched construction at the facility in 2005 and had spent $100 million (£65 million) on the tunnels. The group has previously revealed secret atomic plants at Natanz and Qom that the Iranian regime has subsequently acknowledged to be nuclear facilities. The exiled opposition group is a radical but deeply rooted enemy of the Islamic Republic and its armed wing Mujahedeen e-Khalk is proscribed as a terrorist organisation in the US. EVENT The Washington Post commented on a new report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) this week that showed that since last November, Iran’s stockpile of low enriched uranium has grown from 1,800 kilograms to 2,800 kilograms -- an increase of more than 50 percent. Tehran now has enough low-enriched uranium to produce two nuclear weapons with further enrichment. Iran is moving ever closer to getting a nuclear weapon and no nation appears willing to stop them. The Bible says Iran will be involved in the final conflict over Israel. If it possessed nuclear weapons can we doubt they would use them? Zechariah 14 speaks of the symptoms caused by a nuclear war. COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE (Zechariah 14:12)

  9. He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power. This man exists at the time of the end. He is a latter day king of the north. Putin overshadows Medvedev's democracy meeting VOA news, September 10, 2010 Russia's president talked democracy Friday at an annual gathering of intellectuals and political leaders. While an autumn sun lit freshly painted white walls of this 1,000-year-old city, a long shadow was cast over the gathering by Russia's prime minister and former president, Vladimir Putin. In recent weeks, Mr. Putin has been cultivating his image as a man of action. Night after night, Russians watched on the evening television news as their prime minister piloted a fire-fighting plane, shot an arrow into an Arctic whale, inaugurated a pipeline to China, launched construction of a space centre and drove a bright yellow Russian-made Lada car across Siberia. Nikolai Petrov, political analyst of the Moscow Carnegie Centre, said Mr. Putin's image contrasts with that of President Medvedev in the public's mind. "What is understandable for ordinary Russians is the fact that [Mr.] Medvedev is speaking, and [Mr.] Putin is doing.” EVENT Russia's constitution limits presidential terms to two in succession. In 2008, after two consecutive terms in office, Mr. Putin stepped aside. His protégé, Mr. Medvedev, was elected to a four-year term. Because the Russian constitution only limits terms that are consecutive, Mr. Putin is eligible to run again in elections in March 2012. If he were elected to two additional consecutive terms, Mr. Putin could conceivably serve as president through 2024. The Bible speaks of a man like Mr Putin. Daniel 8 describes the attributes of the future “king of the north”. This is NOT the Pope – he is the “little horn” of Daniel 7. Daniel 8 speaks of a man who is “magnified in his heart” and by “prosperity destroys many” COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 8:25)

  10. For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:…And upon all the ships of Tarshish.. And the idols he shall utterly abolish. The day of the Lord will be on Tarshish and the idols. There is no greater idol than the Pope. Pope faces protests and apathy on visit to Britain The Guardian, September 10, 2010 When Benedict XVI lands at Edinburgh airport on Thursday, he is unlikely to get the rapturous reception that greeted John Paul II on his visit to Britain in 1982. Over the coming days, the pope will be faced with protesters demanding action on clerical sexual abuse of children and voicing anger at the £20m cost of the state visit, and must also contend with public apathy. A recent survey revealed 77% of people questioned felt the taxpayer should not contribute to the cost of the visit, with 79% saying they had "no personal interest" in the pontifical trip. Human rights activists, secularists, survivors of clerical sexual abuse and reform-minded Catholics have formed a loose coalition to ensure the opportunity is not wasted. The movement is spearheaded by Protest the Pope, a group with nearly 9,000 Facebook members, which is planning a march in London in a week to demonstrate against the visit. EVENT Next week, for the first time in history, the little horn of Daniel 7, the harlot of Rome, the man of sin is coming on a state visit to Britain. The Pope has been invited by the Queen and her government and he will have all the ceremonial pomp and recognition that goes with a state visit. His first meeting is with the Queen. This is extremely significant for it means that the Queen is openly breaking her coronation oath to God. She promised to keep the “protestant faith”. A protestant is one who protests at the authority of the Pope. How can she be protesting at his authority when she publicly recognises him and gives him the honour of a state visit? As she publicly breaks her vow in a few weeks we can see Britain singing like a harlot as promised in Isaiah 23. It is a sign that the judgements not only of Britain but the entire world are near…. COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 2:12,16,18)
