  1. Aim: To create a New Year’s Resolution that reflects where I am academically and emotionally Do Now: • A. Definethe term resolution. • B. Describethe purpose of setting a resolution.

  2. Aim: To create a New Year’s Resolution that reflects where I am academically and emotionally. Individual Activity On your own, create three new year’s resolutions on your handout, which will be collected. • A.Class Resolution. Something you think your entire class should work on improving till the end of the school year. How will they implement it. • B. Personal Academic Resolution. Something that you will work on improving in your academic life till the end of the school year. Include how you will implement it. • C.Personal Resolution. Something you want to work on improving for yourself, outside of school.

  3. Aim: To create a New Year’s Resolution that reflects where I am academically and emotionally. Toolbox: What is a New Year’s Resolution? A New Year’s resolution starts with a reflection on any change(s) you want or need to make in the new year. It is followed by a resolve or plan to implement* the change(s). Example: I will stop eating sugary snacks after school and will instead eat fruit when I get hometo tide me over before dinner. I will complete all of my schoolwork on time. I will start it as soon as I get homeand before I play any video gamesor go on Facebook.*

Group Activity: • Choose a Leader to facilitate the discussion, a Recorder to write the goals, and a Speaker to share the goal with the class. Instructions: • 1. You will all share your class resolutions (A) • 2. You will discuss and decide which classroom resolution in your group has the most validity* • 3. Your recorder will write the resolution you decide on for the class. • 4. Your speaker will share your class resolution. • You must justify your resolution with 1 – 2 concrete examples. (see examples in italics in toolbox).

In your essay please include: • Intro: Include A. a hook B. Describe what a resolution is. C. Explain why they are made. D. A thesis where you state your resolution. • Body Paragraph: A. Hook/topic sentence. B. Re-describe your resolution again but in new words (do not repeat it in the same way). C.How will you implement it. D. Describe any problems you foresee in implementing it. • Conclusion:A. A hook/topic sentence. B. Restate your thesis. C. Explain why your resolution is significant. (Why is it important to you). D. Tell me something new about your resolution that I did not know. E. Finally, end with a concluding sentence about resolutions in general.

  6. Aim: To create a New Year’s Resolution that reflects where I am academically and emotionally. HOMEWORK: If you have not finished your essay in class, you MUST finish it for homework. Remember, the marking period is over at the end of the month and the homework grades are what usually bring your grades down. So please be conscious of doing your homework.
