  3. Nice job last week giving your layout speeches! • Just remember to … • Speak a bit LOUDER! • Look at EVERYONE in your audience! • Use a few HAND GESTURES!

  4. Since the beginning of this course, you have learned about … • Body Posture • Eye Contact • Hand Gestures • Voice Inflection • (pages 28-38, DVD #3)

  5. Let’s look at page 28! What is voice inflection? Voice inflection means changing your voicein order to emphasize important words in your speech.

  6. You can change your voice in one of three ways: Stress a word or phrase Stretch a word or phrase Pause before a word or phrase Let’s listen to three examples on page 28!

  7. Why is voice inflection important? Just like gestures, it makes your speech more interestingandenergetic,and it helps the audienceunderstand your speech!

  8. Look at the bottom of page 28! Let’s listen to two radio advertisements! Which radio announcer uses voice inflection?

  9. Let’s listen again! This time, write downthe words that the radio announcer emphasizes. After listening, check your words with your partner.

  10. Now, let’s look at page 29! Listen to the six sentences and write a check mark next to the type of voice inflection that the speaker uses.

  11. Let’s listen again! This time, underline the words that the speaker emphasizes.

  12. What kindsof words should be inflected when you give a speech? Let’s look at pages 30-31!

  13. Usually, we emphasize words from these five word groups: • Numbers • Action words (verbs) • Descriptive words (adjectives and adverbs) • Comparison words • Negative words

  14. Listen to each sentence and underline the inflected word or phrase for each of the five word groups. Which word or phrase did you underline?

  15. Now, listen again and repeat each sentence using voice inflection for the inflected words that you underlined.

  16. Let’s practice more! • Work with a partner. • Choose who is Student A and Student B. • Stand up! • Student A: Look at page 32. • Student B: Look at page 34.

  17. Student A: Readthe sentences on page 32. There are two sentences for each of the five slides. Student B: Listen to the sentences your partner reads. Then, repeat the sentences using voice inflection AND gestures.

  18. Now, change roles! • Student A: Look at page 33. • Student B: Look at page 35.

  21. Watch again! This time, write the steps and the warnings in the evaluation form • on page 37. Steps Warnings 1. Toast the bread. 1. Don’t burn the toast! 2. Open the can. 2. Drain the tuna! 3. Cut the cucumber. 3. Don’t cut your finger! 4. Assemble the sandwich. 4. Don’t sprinkle too much pepper! 5. Cut the sandwich. 5. Be careful not to cut yourself! 6. Serve with fresh fruit. 6. N/A

  22. Speech Preparation (page 38) Step 1: PLAN.Make a storyboard on a sheet of A4. Step 2: PREPARE.Illustrate the steps using photos or drawings (I recommend using photos!). Step 3: PRACTICE.Practice all of the physical skills, especially gestures and voice inflection. STEP 4: PERFORM. Use your visual to explain.

  23. Homework Prepare a two-minutedemonstration speech teaching your classmates how to do something. Use the guide on page 38 to help you. Examples: how to make your favorite food or drink how to ride a motorcycle how to play a game how to shop on the Internet how to put on makeup

  24. Remember!!! • Make an A4 poster to show people. • Practice and perform your speech at home. • Use gestures and voice inflection!  • Time yourself—two minutes! • Follow the Posture and Eye Contact Checklist (page 12)! • Keep it simple! Watch DVD episode #3 again to help you.
