Expert: Pascal Colmaire / 1 • Started Archery in 1970 • Earned a dozen national titles in France and in Canada. • French Team Member in various selections between 1972 and 1986: World and European Champion in Team Field Archery. • First Student National Champion in 1973 at the age of 17. • Became Professional Archery Coach in 1978. • Leader of the French National Team from 1987 until 1992. • Education in Archery, Sports and Physical Education: BEES3 and DES INSEP in France - NCCP4 in Canada - Physical Education Professor. • Studied Kyudo since 1988. Now 4th Dan and teach this martial art. • National Archery Coach in Canada after France’s success in the Olympic Games in Barcelona, from 1993 until 2000. • Director of the National Archery Center in Canada.   12. Coaching Levels in FITA How many levels in coaching should FITA develop? Coaches Role = help in the development of the archer. Identify the steps in the development of the archer. Identify the needs of the archer in each step. Develop a coaching level for each step including specific knowledge. Pascal COLMAIRE – FITA Development & Education Director

Coaching Levels in FITA Level 1 THE NEEDS OF THE BEGINNER: • Discover the fundamentals of archery in a way that the beginner can be capable of practicing any type of archery (including any type of bow or discipline). COACHING REQUIREMENTS: To instruct the basic TECHNIQUES & SAFETY fundamentals of archery: • To any beginner: child, adolescent, adult, senior or handicapped person. • To an individual or a group of beginners. • In an archery club, a school, a community centre, a rehabilitation centre or at a tourist centre. • In an enthusiastic way MAJOR DIFFICULTY: • Prevent teaching a specific technique too early in development.   14. CoachingLevels in FITA Level 2 ARCHERS NEEDS: Improve the efficiency in one or two kinds of archery, emphasizing a combination of type of bow and discipline. At this level some archers choose to participate at a recreational level and others at a competitive level. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Be able to increment the capabilities of the archer in some disciplines. MAJOR DIFFICULTY: Being competent in various archery disciplines and divisions.   15. Coaching Levels in FITA Level 3 ARCHERS NEEDS: To reach a high competitive level in one or more various types of disciplines in archery. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Be capable of training and developing specific competitive abilities of the archer in one or two archery disciplines over a determined period of time. Certification = recognised potential to become a good coach But still a lot to do: learning & development of know-how’s. What do we need to get progressing archers?   28. Efficient Coaching • Attention One of the most common errors is to give excess importance to the technical aspect of training. Experience has demonstrated that a high technical archer in a poor structured environment has very little probability to reach and maintain oneself in the archery elite. • Suggestions For every requirement mentioned earlier, a person or committee should be clearly designated as responsible, or the coordinator, in your Archery Federation or at least in the High Level Performance Committee.
