Bit of History • Occupied since pre-historic times • First historical data 9th century by Muhammad I • Originally named Majerit • Sephardi Jews and Moorscontinued to live in the city until they were expelled at the end of the 15th century. • Devastated by large fire in late 1400s • During the 1500s, Sevilla controlled commerce with Spanish colonies but Madrid controlled Spain • Carlos III (1716-1788), one of the most popular kings, made Madrid a modern city • May 1808 Napoleon took the city

Bit of History continued • One of the most affected cities during the Spainsh Civil War in 1939 • During the Civil War that Madrid became the first city to be bombed by airplanes specifically targeting civilians in the history of warfare • Francisco Franco dictatorship during the 1960s • March 11, 2004 Madrid suffered terrorist attack said to be the worst massacre since Civil War • December 2006 suffered another terrorist attack • Lost in the running to host Olympic 2012 games to London
