  1. The Art of Language Journal Topic: What does it mean to “survive”? Does it mean that you get back to civilization and all the comforts of home? Or does it mean to be alive? Support your answer with examples of surviving from your own life, and other books you have read or movies you have seen. Your entry must be at least 7-10 sentences in length!

  2. Transition time • Pass out papers…. • Let’s take ALL our papers from the first nine weeks out!

  3. Cornell Note- Taking • Get out one piece of paper and a pencil. Write your name, date, class period, and “Notes for Assessment #1” on the top right hand corner. • DO NOT RIP THE PAPER!

  4. Writing Assessment #1 • After reading Hatchet, what events in the story led to Brian going from a dependent “city boy” who knew very little about how to take care of himself, to a self-reliant, strong young man who knew how to survive alone in the wilderness? • What character traits did Brian acquire while surviving for 54 days? • Use evidence from the story that shows how Brian changed. Provide support for your ideas by paraphrasing sentences from the book that support your understanding.

  5. SURVIVAL

  6. IN your agendas…. • Tonight’s homework: Vocabulary Pre-test • This is a PRE TEST. I do not want you to get help from ANYONE. No parents, siblings, internet, dictionary! • THIS IS NOT A GRADE! IT IS A PRE-TEST!
