BACKGROUND TO SELANDRA RISE • Located 52km from CBD in Melbourne’s South East • Launched in 2008 to demonstrate how objectives for affordable, healthy and liveable communities can be achieved ‘on the ground’ • Collaborative Partnership between Industry, Government & the Private Sector • Project Objectives: • Improving housing diversity • Promoting local employment • Creating a healthy and engaged community • Support Partners: Vic Health, DHS, DPCD, RMIT

PROJECT STATUS • Presales Commenced – May 2010 • Public Launch – July 2010 • Lots sold – 750 of 1200 • First Resident – Moved in November 2011 • St Peter’s Secondary College – Opened October 2011 • Display Village Opening – Opened November 2011 • Selandra Community Place – Opened March 2012 • Hilltop Park, the people’s park – July 2012 • Selandra Rise Health & Wellbeing Residents Survey – Oct 2012 • Retirement Living – November 2012 • Village Centre Stage 1 – December 2013

Health & Wellbeing Rigour Test “What ingredients make a Healthy & Engaged Community” • Application of the ‘Putting health at the centre of planning’ framework • Key interest areas include Social Inclusion, Mental Health, Childhood Health, Physical Activity, Safety and Food Accessibility • Reviewed a range of best practice guidelines (e.g. Walkability tool kit, CPTED) & established a list of key initiatives that are incorporated into the planning & design of the new community WHAT MAKES SELANDRA RISE DIFFERENT?

COMMITMENT TO BEST PRACTICE • Selandra Community Place (SCP) • More than 1,000 people have visited SCP • 300 people engaging in the community programs • 50 people participating in the sustainable programs • 8 people participating in a building plan consultation.  • The SCP website has had on average 750 visitors per month, including international visitors from USA, Canada and Japan • www.selandracommunityplace.com.au • There has been significant industry interest in the project and the research-supported initiative.  • Peak bodies and senior government representatives have visited the centre regularly.

Linked to Rigour Test Health & Wellbeing Iniatives • Evidence based approach to planning • Comparative Analysis: ABS data set to mesh block level • Proving the theories through testing: • Research question: “To what extent do best practice planning principles for space & place impact on the health & wellbeing of the community of Selandra Rise?” A Tested Blueprint for Future Communities • A blueprint for developers, industry and government policy Committed Partnership • Vic Health funded RMIT ‘Research Practice Fellow’ LONGITUDINAL STUDY

LONGITUDINAL STUDY • Selandra Rise Neighbourhood Health and Wellbeing Residents Survey commenced 8 October 2012 (86 from 400 survey responses to date) • What are the benefits associated with participation? • The findings of the research will be used to improve Selandra Rise, as it develops, and set a standard for future new communities. • Participating in the survey gives the residents the opportunity to reflect on their neighbourhood and their health and wellbeing. • A summary of the research findings will be available for all participants and for dissemination by the project working group in December 2012.
